After holding a working meeting, the minister announced a series of investments in cultural and sporting matters on the Islands, including 13 million euros until 2026 to refurbish and condition state-owned museums and libraries. In this sense, the State Government will invest 5 million euros to reopen the Dalt Vila headquarters of the Museu Arqueològic de Eivissa i Formentera, in response to a historic claim, 3.7 million euros for the complete remodelling of the Museu Etnològic de Muro, 2.2 million euros for the archaeology section of the Museu de Mallorca, 1.7 million euros to update the Palma Can Salas Public Library, and 100,000 euros for the Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca (Regional Archive of Mallorca).
At the same time, Minister Iceta has pledged to study the possibility of “opening a new state public library in Menorca” to address the physical separation of the Arxiu and the Maó Library, which currently share space and require separate headquarters.
The State doubles investment for the Balearic Islands in culture and sports in the draft general budget for next year
“We are doubling the investment in culture and sports in the Balearic Islands, going from 1.6 million euros this 2022 to 3.3 million euros next year,” confirmed the minister, who also explained the investment of 3.5 million euros for the Centro de Tecnificació Esportiva de les Illes Balears (Sports Technification Centre of the Balearic Islands), coming from European funds. “This centre will receive the most money next year from the Next Generation funds in the whole of Spain, basically for digitalisation projects, sustainability, energy and ecological transition and improvement of equipment,” Iceta explained.
The President of the Government, Francina Armengol, highlighted the minister’s “sensitivity” towards the Balearic Islands. “I would like to thank Miquel Iceta for his constant complicity with this autonomous community, which he knows perfectly well, so that I can present the challenges that we have with his ministry and, as a whole, for the society of the Islands. We have a lot of potential, including, as I have always said, many cultural and sporting references that give us a very important part of what we want to project abroad”, said Francina Armengol.
These words were ratified by the minister. “The fact that Palma is today a world reference point for modern and contemporary art is no coincidence,” said Iceta, referring to the inauguration this Friday of the Annual Conference of the International Committee of Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) at the Es Baluard Museum, under the presidency of the King of Spain, Felipe VI. “Es Baluard is a key part of this success. Some say: it is the figure of Miró. Yes, it is, but it is also the work and commitment of the governments,” concluded Iceta, who also announced an increase in the insularity corrector in aid for music and theatre tours from 15% to 25% and the investment of one million euros for the candidacy of Menorca Talaiòtica as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After the meeting, President Francina Armengol and Minister Iceta visited the Llibres Colom bookshop, on the occasion of today’s Bookshop Day.
