Fira B

The most important professional market for music and performing arts in the Balearic Islands, Fira B! separates this year, for the first time, the disciplines of music and performing arts. Thus, the performing arts program will take place on October 9, 10, 11 and 12, and the music program, from 2 to 5 November.

The performing arts program this year has a total of 27 theatre, circus, dance, new formats and street performances. The guest country of this eighth edition is Chile, with 2 Chilean companies in the program: Cía Interdram and Cía LaRe-Sentida.

“Since the Govern, two events (4 days each) dedicated to culture are held for all citizens and live arts professionals. Today we present Fira B! Artes Escénicas, an edition with shows to showcase and promote the creations of artists from the Balearic Islands, along with works from Chile, the Canary Islands, Valencia and Catalonia,” commented Perelló.

The inaugural event will be on Monday, October 9, at 7 p.m. at the Teatro Principal with the performance of La posibilidad de la Ternura, by the Chilean company La Re-Sentida (Marco Layera / Carolina Maza). This is the Spanish premiere of this play that reflects on masculinity from the point of view of young teenagers. After this Spanish premiere at Fira B!, the play will be shown in Madrid and Barcelona. On the same day, at 9 p.m. also at the Teatro Principal, “Las preposiciones” will be staged, a play by playwright Aina de Cuerpo, a co-production of the Teatro Principal and El Sueño Producciones.

The closing of Feria B! of Performing Arts, will be Thursday, October 12, at the Teatro Principal. At 20.00 h. Aurora Bauzà and Pere Jou will perform “A beginning_Expanded Version”, a winning piece of the IEB 2022 creation grants, co-production of the Auditorium of Barcelona, the Centre Coregraphique National of Orleans (France) and the Principal Theater of Palma.

In order to make the most of the fair, the shows have been distributed on different days according to the disciplines. Thus, the first two days – October 9 and 10 – will focus mainly on text theatre pieces and new languages. Wednesday and Thursday, October 11 and 12 will be the turn of movement, dance, circus, street theater and visual theater.

The complete program can already be consulted on the website. The pieces that are part of the program have been selected among the 300 proposals submitted through the open call that closed at the beginning of the year.

The commission of experts that selected the proposals was formed by:

  • Joan Negrié, director FITT (International Theater Festival of Tarragona) and Sala Trono.
  • Catalina Caldentey, president of ATAPIB – Association of Theaters and Public Auditoriums of the Balearic Islands.
  • Maria Novel, technical Culture Consell Insular Formentera.
  • Joan Matamales, director of the Theater of Artà and member of ATAPIB (Association of Theaters and Public Auditoriums of the Balearic Islands).
  • Pere Cortada, Theater of Capdepera and member of ATAPIB (Association of Theaters and Public Auditoriums of the Balearic Islands).
  • Teresa Carranza, coordinator of the Creation area of the Ramon Llull Institute.
  • Clara Matas Vidal, cultural manager specialising in Live Arts and assistant executive director of the FiM festival in Vila-Seca.
  • Perelló highlighted the adhesion of Fira B within the Apropa Cultura program and its commitment to strengthening the role of women in culture. “In performing arts, the female presence is close to 60%, with some proposals formed entirely by women,” she said. Fira B! combines programming and Professional Days, i.e., activities aimed at the professional sector that will be held at the Mar y Tierra theatre. Registration for the Fira B! professional days of Performing Arts is open and can be done through https://pro.firab.org/firab/en/info.

“The Professional Conference confirms the commitment of this Government to the projection of the cultural sector of the Balearic Islands. They will allow the entire artistic community of the Islands to present their projects to local and foreign programmers and professionals, as well as to establish synergies and collaborations with other artists, through various actions, such as Tasting of text and tasting of movement, at the Teatre del Mar, where we can see emerging and innovative projects; and the round table ‘Estatuto Artista’, with the presence of Carmen Paez, director general of Cultural Industries, Intellectual Property and Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Government of Spain, among others, “said Perelló. Among these activities aimed at a professional audience, the presence of playwrights and playwrights associations from all over Spain, and the Jornadas Tránsito, with Illescena, AVETID, Red Alcover; the Red Mediterránea de la Danza y el Movimiento; and Impulso a la Danza, with Danza Valencia – Instituto Valenciano de la Cultura, among others, stand out.

Fira B! will always take place in emblematic spaces and scenarios of the city of Palma, giving it a plus of interest for attendees from outside the islands. The stages of the 2023 edition will be the municipal theatres Mar y Tierra and Xesc Forteza; the Teatro Principal de Palma, the Museum of Contemporary Art Se Baluarte, the Espacio el Tub, the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza Miquel Maura (in front of the Xesc Forteza Theater) and the Rambla (outside the Teatro Principal de Palma).

In Fira B! 2023 there will be numerous exchanges. At the national level, we will have, on the one hand, the Foco Canario through the Festival Canarios Dentro y Fuera, within which we find the company of Daniel Abreu (which has two members who have received the National Dance Award). On the other hand, we find the Valencian company Jacob Gómez, through DansaValència. Internationally, we will have two Chilean companies (Interdram and La Re-sentida). Also, for the last 9 years Fira B! has been a member of COFAE, the Spanish Coordination of Performing Arts Fairs. COFAE’s mission is to collaborate in the concept of the performing arts market and to disseminate it; it also wants to promote the fairs as a meeting point for professionals in the sector and as a space for reflection and training. COFAE is also a member of IETM (International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts).
