The speed on the Cintura road goes from 80 to 100 kilometres per hour. A measure demanded by the entire transport sector, cab drivers and users and should contribute to improving the mobility of Mallorca. The implementation is supported by three technical reports on the environment, layout and accident rate.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the councillor of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructures, Fernando Rubio, visited today the Cintura road to check the implementation of the new measure. “Today is an important day for our island, in which it becomes more evident that change is underway in Mallorca. From today, the new maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour on the Cintura road is already a reality. A measure demanded and expected by the Mallorcans”, said Llorenç Galmés.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca explained that “this measure has the support of the professionals of the transport sector, cab drivers and users. Also, the decision has been taken with the endorsement of technical reports that point out that there will be less fuel consumption”.

The president of the Consell has also reminded us that with the new speed all safety standards are met, that the Cintura road is the highway of Mallorca with the lowest accident rate and that, in the last 2 years, with the limit at 80 kilometres per hour there have been more fatal accidents than in the last 11 years.

The technical reports

The main conclusion of the environmental impact report states that: “the analysis carried out indicates that a maximum speed of 100 km/h is much more efficient in terms of fuel consumption, especially in heavy vehicles. With the increase in speed, an estimated saving of 20,078 litres of gasoline per year and 397,755 litres of diesel per year has been estimated”. The technical report goes on to state that “the reduction in fuel consumption is associated with a reduction in harmful emissions: the most significant are 11,214 kg/year of NO2 (nitrogen oxide), 780 kg/year of MMVOC (volatile methane compounds), 385 tons/year of CO2 and 320 kg/year of PM10 (suspended particles)”.

Regarding the accident rate, the report reveals that the Cintura road is the highway of Mallorca with the lowest danger index (PI) of the last 10 years. The technicians indicate that “since 2016 there has been a downward trend, both of the PI and the total number of accidents, and all values are always below 30, the limit below which is considered a very low PI”. As for fatalities, the report exposes that an increase has been observed since 2021: until then, in 11 years, there had been only 3 fatal accidents and it has gone to 5 fatal accidents in 3 years.

In addition, the report on the layout indicates that the speed at 100 km/hour complies with safety standards 3.1 IC of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, and advises, in two sections, to improve the road surface, as it is much more advisable to maintain the same speed along the entire length of the road.
