Among the most outstanding measures: the use of reusable cups and bottles that avoided more than 30,000 plastic bottles, the planting of fruit trees, beach cleaning and the replacement of physical medals and finisher t-shirts with personalised videos and medals in NFT format.

Eivissa Multisport Triathlon World Championship
Excellent news for one of the great sporting events in Spain in May, the Ibiza Multisport Triathlon World Championships, which made history by becoming the first European event to achieve Zero Waste certification.
The championship, which had previously obtained the Gold certificate in sustainability from the International Triathlon Federation (World Triathlon), now receives this Zero Waste certification, one of the most important in terms of circularity, by the ‘Mission Zero Academy’, a programme promoted by ‘Zero Waste Europe’.
“By addressing the challenges of waste reduction and redefining purchasing policies, this event stands as a role model for circularity. As the first of its kind, we hope to inspire future events towards a more sustainable and Zero Waste future in sport,” said Solène Fargeix, Business Development Director of the Mission Zero Academy.
This recognition was possible thanks to the sustainability strategy promoted by the Championships, which was included in the sustainability movement of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, called Good-Loop. Among the measures adopted, the use of reusable cups and bottles, together with the innovative installation of 18 water supply points in and around the circuits, which prevented the use of more than 30,000 plastic bottles, the use of reusable cups and bottles, the use of a new water bottle, and the use of a new water bottle, were some of the most important measures adopted by the Championships. This avoided the use of more than 30,000 plastic bottles, the use of infinitely recyclable aluminium cans for the athletes’ sealed containers due to anti-doping regulations, the planting of 50 fruit trees instead of the usual presentation of bouquets on the podium or the replacement of the finisher t-shirts and medals with personalised videos for the athletes and medals in NFT format (3.43 tonnes of carbon dioxide were avoided with the medals in NFT format and 21.45 tonnes with the personalised video).
“The Balearic Islands Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport is deeply satisfied with this award. Once again, it shows that our athletes are champions in their categories, but also in environmental awareness for the environment that welcomes them. Sporting events of this magnitude are key to our strategy of deseasonalisation, but they must go hand in hand with sustainability and respect for our territory, which is fragile and limited. For all these reasons, thank you and congratulations to the organisation of the Ibiza Multisport World Cup,” said the Councillor for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Jaume Bauzà.
The president of the Consell de Eivissa, Vicent Marí, celebrated this certification, recalling that “the island of Ibiza aims to be an example of sustainable development, with an awareness of the need to preserve an environment that has made us famous all over the world. Recognising the good work of awareness that the practice of sport is perfectly compatible with keeping our island intact is very good news both for the Federation and for the whole organisational fabric of sporting events on our island and for Ibiza in general”.
Eivissa, a guide towards a more sustainable future
The Eivissa World Cup has already become a reference for other sporting events, setting a clear line to follow in the future, something that the Spanish and International Federations undoubtedly agree with. “The Ibiza Multisport World Cup was a success in every way and now, with this recognition, it is even more so. It is undoubtedly a great satisfaction for the Spanish Federation and it shows us the way forward for the events that we are going to hold in Spain in 2024”, commented José Hidalgo, President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation.
The president of the Balearic Triathlon Federation, Ignasi Colom, also expressed his satisfaction: “In the Balearic Islands we are very committed to the environment. To a large extent, we live from tourism that comes in search of idyllic places, which we must conserve and protect. That is why we are proud that an event on our islands, and in our sport, has been certified as the first in Europe with Zero Waste”.
