The water reserves of the Balearic Islands
The general situation of the demarcation, with an index of 0.454, reflects a decrease in comparison with the indices of previous years: 0.498 last year and 0.594 two years ago. This trend indicates a slight reduction in the availability of water resources.
As for the analysis by Demand Units (DU), variability is detected: Tamuntana Sur, Eivissa and Formentera have recorded decreases in their reserves, while Menorca, Manacor-Felanitx and Migjorn have shown increases. Artà, Pla, Palma-Alcúdia and Tramontana Norte have maintained their levels.
More than 83.3% of the territory is in a pre-alert situation, with the UD of Migjorn in a normal situation and Formentera in an emergency. This distribution indicates a need for continuous and adaptive management of resources.
According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), during the month of November, the Balearic Islands experienced significantly less rainfall than usual. The average was 14.8 l/m², compared to a historical average of 85.6 l/m². In Mallorca, 15.2 l/m² was recorded, while the average is 88.3 l/m². In Menorca, the figure was 26.2 l/m², compared to an average of 95.9 l/m². Eivissa and Formentera also recorded less rainfall than normal, with 1.6 l/m² and 1.0 l/m² respectively, far from their average values of 66.8 l/m² and 48.8 l/m².
This downward trend in rainfall affects the year-on-year percentage in the Balearic Islands, standing at 93%, with Mallorca at 96%, Menorca at 85% and the Pitiusas at 77%.
In terms of temperatures, the month of November was particularly warm, with an average of 15.9 °C, which is 1.6 °C above the usual anomaly for this time of year. This combination of high temperatures and low rainfall presents challenges in the management of water resources and in adapting to climatic conditions.
