The last miller of Mallorca
The Consell de Mallorca delivers the Crafts Awards 2023 and recognizes the artisans of Mallorca with a total of 35,000 euros. This tenth edition has been the most participated in the entire history of the awards, with a total of 90 nominations. This was highlighted by the vice president of the Consell de Mallorca and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, who stressed that “this success shows that craftsmanship is more alive than ever” and assured that “from the Consell de Mallorca will work so that the artisans of the island have the recognition they deserve”.
The event was also attended by the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, who stressed the importance of the past and traditions being present in our future: “With craftsmanship, with your hands, you can preserve all the history that represents us”.
The winner of the Crafts Award of Mallorca 2023 has been the last miller of the island Miquel Ramis Bordoy, who collected, this Saturday, the award, valued at 7,000 euros. The work presented has been the restoration of a mill and the jury has considered that the piece has an unparalleled quality and sustainability
As for the Artisan Tradition Award, valued at 5,000 euros, the winner was the master carver of Palma Jaume Amengual Serapio, with the word “Xarxa de Botaló”. The jury has valued that Amengual is the continuation of a whole family tradition, is the seventh generation of a family of farmers. The Design and Innovation award, also valued at 5,000 euros, went to Roberto Parparcone, with the work “Sa Garreta”.
Finally, the Artisan Gastronomy award and the Fashion of Mallorca award, valued at 4,000 euros each, went to José Trias Planas, with the product “coca de torró variant mallorquina”, and to Joana Maria Borràs, with the word “Camia Mallorca”.
Apart from the six categories that were awarded this Saturday, the jury wanted to make a special recognition to three participants who, although they have not won in their category, deserve a distinction for their work. These have been the knife-maker of Santa Eugènia Xavier Verd Vidal, with the work “Trinxet”; the dyer of Palma Tatiana Carmen Sarasa, with the work “Coixí de sa muntanyeta”, and the jeweller of Campos Damià Mulet Vanrell, with the work “Canyís amb albercocs”. Each of these runner-up prizes is valued at 1,000 euros.
At the end of the event, attendees were able to enjoy an aperitif made with all kinds of artisan products of the island, such as panades, cocarrois, sobrassada, cheeses and much more.
