SFM implements a state-of-the-art security system, a reference in Europe
The investment is added to other measures underway to increase frequencies.
The Consell de Govern has granted prior authorisation to Servicios Ferroviarios de Mallorca (SFM) to process the expenditure file corresponding to the tender for the contract to implement the new safety and supervision system for the train and metro network, the leading system of reference in Europe for conventional trains, for 28.5 million Euro, as well as the tender for the technical assistance for the supervision of the project, inspection of the works and commissioning of the new systems, for an amount of 1.3 million Euro.

30 million investment in new train and metro security
With an overall investment of almost 30 million, the commitment to improve the safety of the railway network is fulfilled. The implementation of this new automatic train protection system, based on the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System), will make it possible to adapt the SFM network to the European standard system for supervision of driving, signalling and speed control, which guarantees the interoperability of railway systems and increases the capacity of infrastructures and the level of safety in rail transport.
In practice, this investment is key to enabling future improvements to the train and metro service, significantly increasing traffic safety, while modernising current technologies and providing new management and operating tools, which will lead to an improvement in the conditions in which the service is provided, enabling the SFM network to match the safety, reliability and technology levels of other European countries’ rail networks.
This new investment by SFM is in addition to other measures already underway which will make it possible to extend timetables and increase frequency on the rail network, such as the incorporation of five new trains this year and the recent addition of 14 new train drivers to the railway company’s staff, to meet the increased demand for the service.
The implementation of the new safety system for SFM’s rail network will be completed in phases, starting with the metro network and with budget forecasts for the amounts of almost 30 million for both tenders in the budgets for 2024 and the next five years, until 2029.
This is a strategic project for SFM which, given the magnitude, duration, deadlines to be met and workload of the project, makes it necessary to contract the technical assistance service to be provided externally, due to the lack of in-house personnel with the specific profiles required by the nature of the contract.
The purpose of this contract is to provide a technical assistance service in the engineering, RAMS and safety, manufacturing, works, installation, commissioning and warranty testing phases of the automatic train protection system, from the design phase (estimated for the second half of 2024) to the warranty phase and completion of the works contract (estimated for the first half of 2029).
