Record number of schools participating in the ‘Service Learning in the Serra de Tramuntana’ programme

This is the ninth school year that the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium, in conjunction with the Department of Education and Universities, has launched the ‘Serra de Tramuntana Service Learning’ program for Mallorca’s schools, which is supported by public funds and offered through the Teacher Training Centers.
The teachers participating in the program receive specific training on the ‘service learning’ methodology, as well as training on the values of the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage-listed cultural landscape. Councilor Fuster explained that these workshops are scheduled to begin in October.

From here, the teachers work with the students to develop a project that is at the same time a service to the Serra de Tramuntana, such as collaborating with non-profit organizations to conserve the environment or the pedra en sec, creating information panels and brochures, or designing educational games to learn about the Serra.

The great success of this programme, according to Councillor Fuster, can be explained ‘by the participatory methodology of learning from the environment and participating in its conservation. This gives the children a bond and a sense of belonging to the Serra de Tramuntana, and they learn to love it.

The Governing Board was also attended by the Councilor of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio; the Serra de Tramuntana Island Director, Antoni Solivellas; the manager of the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium, Lluís Vallcaneras; the Director General of Culture, Ricarda Margarita Vicens; the Mayor of Sóller, Miquel Nadal; the Mayor of Esporles, Josep Maria Ferrà; and the political representatives of the parties represented on the Consell de Mallorca.
