Balearic Islands celebrates the European Day of Languages with a multilingual concert in Ibiza
The main event of the day, organised jointly by the Regional Ministry of the Presidency and Public Administrations and the Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), consisted of a multilingual concert held in collaboration with the Sant Josep de sa Talaia Town Council, featuring local and international musicians and groups from Ibiza, who performed a repertoire in different languages and musical styles. Thus, Claudia Ottelli, from Swingin Tonic (Italian); Seán and Raúl, from The Moonshine Band (Gaelic); Montse Llaràs and Miquel Prats, from Bluesmàfia i es Saligardos (Catalan); Arthur Gecke and Victor Gresely (German); Frank and Patrick, from The French Connection (French), and Momo Loudiyi and Fabrice Martínez (Darija).
Before the concert began, the Director General for Institutional Relations and Relations with Parliament wanted to use this day to highlight ‘the linguistic diversity that characterises our community’ and to reflect on how ‘languages serve as links that unite people and cultures, building bridges of understanding and brotherhood in the face of any possible differences’.
The European Day of Languages was proclaimed on 26 September 2011 by the Council of Europe, with the support of the European Union. Its main objective is to promote language learning throughout Europe, both among young people and adults.
In the Balearic Islands, in coordination with the Ministry of the Presidency and Public Administrations, local authorities and government departments have unfurled banners commemorating the European Day of Languages, while 60 municipal libraries in September and part of October have participated in various activities, such as storytelling and workshops, funded by Europe Direct Illes Balears.
In addition, in five schools in the Balearic Islands, included in the educational project Ambassador Schools of the European Parliament, a workshop with a game-based approach based on the LEGO Serious Play methodology, which promotes creativity and innovation, designed specifically for their students, has been carried out throughout this week. Precisely today, Francisca Ramis took advantage of her visit to Ibiza to see first-hand how the European Parliament’s Ambassador Schools programme works at IES Algarb, in Sant Jordi de ses Salines, and IES Quartó del Rei, in Santa Eulària des Riu.
