Specifically, the aid consists of a direct subsidy of €90,000 to cover the investments of the project presented by UNECA Balears, which aims to develop communication, promotion and revitalisation actions for street markets in the Balearic Islands, digitalisation and innovation actions, training and information actions, as well as sustainability and social responsibility actions.

Councillor Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro said: ‘The street markets are part of the tradition of the Balearic Islands, places where locals used to gather to buy and sell products, which have evolved and have become relevant for the tourism sector’.

He added: ‘With this aid, we are supporting the self-employed and the workers who are an essential service in both the economic and social spheres in the municipalities of the Balearic Islands’.

José Antonio Caldés, Director General for Enterprise, the Self-Employed and Trade, explained: ‘Trade, in all its forms, is fundamental to the economy of the Balearic Islands. With this subsidy, we seek to encourage modernisation and innovation in this sector, improve the quality of these markets, improve their competitiveness, and make them more professional. In other words, we are promoting and strengthening street trade, which is so important for locals and tourists alike.
