The Consell de Mallorca is collaborating in the 9th Creative Clothing Recycling Marathon in Mallorca, an initiative promoted by the Deixalles Foundation and the Balearic Islands School of Design to raise public awareness, especially among new designers, about the problem of textile waste.

The Marathon will be held on 15 November at the Flassaders Centre, with a duration of 9 hours, and participants will have to design garments, using only clothing from a selective collection.

The presentation ceremony, which took place at the Escuela Superior de Diseño, was attended by the island’s Director of Waste, Margalida Roig; the head of the environmental area of the Deixalles Foundation, Maria Suau Font and the Director of the Escuela Superior de Diseño de las Islas Baleares, Miquel Oliver Monserrat.

The island’s director of Waste explained that ‘this activity will encourage creativity and sustainability, emphasising the reuse of materials we have at our disposal’. ‘From the Department of the Environment we encourage you to participate in this initiative that allows us to raise awareness in society about the importance of using what we have at hand, being aware that this practice is what our parents and grandparents have been doing for years,’ added Margalida Roig during her speech.

This year, the Consell de Mallorca has increased its financial contribution to this activity.

The fight against overproduction and textile waste

Recycling clothes is a key practice in the fight against overproduction and textile waste. Every year, tons of clothes, often little used, are thrown away. Giving these items a second life not only reduces waste but also minimises the impact of the production of new raw materials. In addition, activities like this allow designers to develop a critical view of consumerism and promote ethical and responsible fashion.
