The Directorate General of Emergencies decrees the level IG1 for rain and storms in Mallorca and Menorca and IG0 in the Pitiusas Islands

To coordinate possible joint actions, this morning the DGEI brought together the Technical Support Group of the Plan with representatives of the Consell de Mallorca Fire Department, Palma Fire Department, National Police, Guardia Civil, AEMET, Consell de Mallorca Roads, IBANAT, SAMU 061, Water Resources, RiscBal, etc.

Given the possibility of flooding as a result of heavy rains and given that tomorrow is All Saints’ Day, the Directorate General for Emergencies and the Interior recommends citizens plan visits to cemeteries according to weather conditions and to take extreme precautions, paying special attention to the most vulnerable people. It also recalls the measures to be taken into account in situations of this type:

Measures in the home:

  • Secure doors and windows.
  • Stay in high areas of the house.
  • Remove from outside everything that can be swept away by the water.
  • Move medicines, documents and valuable items, as well as food and drinking water to high places in the house. Hazardous products should also be removed.
  • Avoid basements or low areas such as garages.
  • If water has already entered your home, turn off the main power switch.

Outdoor measures:

  • In the countryside, stay away from torrents and flooding areas.
  • In urban areas, seek shelter in a building.
  • Do not walk in areas with moving water. The faster the water flows, the greater the danger.

Measures on the road:

  • Avoid travelling by car if it is not necessary.
  • If you must drive, moderate your speed and increase your safety distance, and do so on motorways, dual carriageways and main roads.
  • In case of low visibility, stop the vehicle and signal your position.
  • Do not enter flood zones, even if there appears to be little water. In low water, cars float and are easily swept away.
  • If the car starts to float and is swept away, get out immediately. If you can’t get out through the door, use the window.
  • Leave the vehicle and go to higher ground if the car is immobilised by water or the water level has already reached the axle.
  • Carry a charged mobile phone and sufficient fuel in the vehicle.
  • Do not park on bridges, pavements or water overflows.

Remember that, in case of emergency, you must call 112.
