This service of the Conselleria d’Educació confirms that there is a growing tendency in schools to open protocols and investigate reported cases.

Today, UNESCO celebrates the International Day against bullying and cyberbullying in schools and high schools

The Institute for Coexistence and School Success of the Regional Ministry of Education and Universities, Convivèxit, calls on the entire educational community to raise awareness of the cases of physical and psychological violence among peers that occur in schools. Coinciding with the celebration today, Thursday, of the International Day against Violence in the school context, Convivèxit reminds us that the visibility of bullying and cyberbullying at school is the first step to confronting it.

Convivèxit works to raise awareness of physical and psychological violence in schools

So far this school year, Convivèxit has opened a total of 165 investigations on the islands, which represents an increase of 17 per cent compared to this time last year. According to the director of Convivèxit, Antoni Vich, ‘this does not necessarily mean that there has been an increase in cases of bullying, but rather that when there is a suspicion of a case of peer violence by a member of the educational community, the protocol is applied to detect the situation as objectively as possible and to intervene if necessary. In this scenario, it is important to stress that the emotional well-being of the students must be taken into account. It should be remembered that to be considered bullying, four conditions must be met: there must be some kind of violence, such as social isolation or physical aggression; the intention to humiliate or attack; an imbalance of power between the parties involved, and continuity over time. ‘Currently, the educational level with the highest number of protocols activated is the second year of ESO and it is essential to analyse the reasons and act to guarantee respectful coexistence’, says Vich.
Convivèxit assists and advises schools in the event of a suspected case of peer violence, both in person and online at convivexit@caib.es and by telephone on 971.177.608.
