Winners of the 2024 edition
Carlos Loreiro López received the Premi Mallorca de Narrativa for his work Poeta (Poet), a novel that portrays the challenges of everyday life and literary life with humour and agility. In the field of poetry, Albert García Elena was awarded the Premi Mallorca de Poesia en Català for El pixelat del miratge, a work that combines poetry and essay with a sharp, innovative style.
Bàrbara Duran Bordoy won the Premi Mallorca d’Assaig en Català for Cant i treball a Mallorca, a rigorous and accessible study that highlights the island’s music and traditions. In the category of theatrical texts, Miquel Àngel Raió was recognised for Càustiques a massa decibels (On és l’Àngela?), a contemporary play with a brave and direct language.
Illustrated children’s literature also had its place with the work Fugissera, by Marina Bennàsar Ramis and Marina Uguet Ibáñez, winners of the Premi Mallorca de Literatura Infantil Il-lustrada, a delicate and lyrical proposal that combines text and illustration in great harmony.
As for the awards in Spanish, Francisco López Serrano won the Premi Mallorca de Poesia en Castellano with his work La casa habitada por el árbol (The House Inhabited by the Tree), a new category in this edition. Also, for the first time, the Essay in the Spanish category was included, which was left deserted because the jury considered that none of the works presented deserved to receive the prize.
Finally, the Premis Mallorca de Fotografía Contemporània (Mallorca Contemporary Photography Awards) were also presented this evening. Albert Corbí won the Premi Mallorca de Fotografia Contemporània with Tinojay, a photographic installation of high conceptual quality, and Marina Planas won the Talent Illenc award with her proposal Cualquier cosa puede acabar con todo en cualquier moment.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, stressed that ‘literature in Catalan is experiencing a golden moment, with consolidated authors and new talents that stand out strongly’. He also stressed that, for the first time, the Premis Mallorca have been opened up to Spanish with the announcement of two categories that have been very well received by writers, as more than 200 works have been submitted.
Finally, Galmés assured that he wants to ‘position the Premis Mallorca as a benchmark event in the world of literature’ and that he wishes to ‘add to, not subtract from, nor exclude anyone’.
