Department of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructures
Minister Fernando Rubio today visited the construction work on the new infrastructure, included in the Palma Access Plan, for one million euros.
The Councillor of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructures of the Consell de Mallorca, Fernando Rubio, visited the construction work on a new lane on the Llucmajor motorway, between the So n’Oms exit and the access to the airport. This road will be about two kilometres long and is the first phase of the fourth lane that should reach the ring road, included in the Palma Access Plan. The budget for this first phase is around one million euros. Rubio, during the visit to the building site, was accompanied by the island director of Infrastructures, Rafel Gelabert; the Palma councillor for Mobility, Antoni Deudero, and the chief coordinator of the Roads engineers, Miguel Ángel Sagrera.

The Consell de Mallorca begins work on a new lane between the So n’Oms exit and the airport to reduce traffic jams on the Llucmajor motorway
The exit from So n’Oms in the direction of Palma is one of the points of conflict in terms of traffic jams, as a large number of vehicles coming from s’Arenal, Platja de Palma, s’Aranjassa and es Pil-larí are concentrated here. The traffic jams are caused by the lack of capacity of the current access lane to absorb all the vehicles at peak hours. For this reason, this two-kilometre-long road has been designed to provide smoother access to the motorway. The works will last two months.
Fernando Rubio stressed ‘the good results in reducing traffic jams that the works of the Palma Access Plan are producing, and that is why we are not stopping to achieve smoother mobility for all Mallorcans’. This work that we are visiting today,’ added Rubio, ’is a demand that many drivers have been making for years, who saw the traffic jams that were created, and that is why we have promoted the construction of this lane, to minimise their traffic jams as much as possible. The Minister of Territorial Planning, Mobility and Infrastructures recalled the investment of 166 million euros in the Palma Access Plan during this term of office.
Characteristics of the work
The project consists of building an access lane attached to the two existing lanes on the Llucmajor motorway, between the incorporation of the So n’Oms industrial estate and the exit to the airport. To fit this new lane between the existing bridges, and given that the right-hand verge is not wide enough along the entire route, it is necessary to widen the motorway platform and occupy part of the median. Therefore, earthworks must be carried out, both in this median and on the right-hand verge, to provide sufficient road surface width to accommodate the new road, which will be about two kilometres long.
Via de Cintura
On the other hand, the chief coordinator of the Consell de Mallorca’s road engineers, Miguel Ángel Sagrera, explained the actions on via de Cintura that are improving traffic flow: ‘The first is the reorganisation of the access lanes from the motorway to via de Cintura. Before, one of the lanes was only used to head towards Manacor, which caused traffic jams on the motorway. The second action that is also working is the third lane that has been created under the Can Blau roundabout. This new road eliminates the funnel effect.
‘The suspension of the bus-VAO lane means that slow traffic is now back on the right-hand lane, which gives more fluidity to the other two lanes and reduces traffic jams, as vehicles can now be distributed between all lanes. Likewise, the fourth lane at the Can Blau exit to So n’Hugo and the Inca motorway is another action that has been proven to be more than necessary to improve traffic flow on the ring road, added Sagrera.
