The Consell de Mallorca promotes the recently approved dry-stone route as a link with heritage, landscape and mountain sports
The Consell de Mallorca is currently promoting the stone paths of the GR-221 route at Fitur, as a quality tourism format that connects physical activity with local heritage and landscape. The eight stages of the GR-221 route that crosses the Tramuntana mountain range, with a length of 168 kilometres, are a benchmark for medium-range tourism, which has taken up part of promoting the Balearic Islands stand.
The Second Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councilor of the Department of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, emphasized that ‘the purpose of exhibiting the dry-stone route as the soul of Mallorca is to showcase a Mallorca associated with the landscape, the rural environment, heritage, conservation and tradition. Furthermore, he remarked that ‘the link between tourism and physical exercise is one of the other specialised areas of the Consell, which we want to promote, a Mallorca associated with the stone paths of the Tramuntana mountain range, hiking, the landscape, trades and shelters’.

Fitur walks through the Mallorcan Sierra
‘The fact that the approval of the GR-221 dry-stone route was completed at the end of last year, and the projected opening and restoration of two new refuges planned for the future, positions us in the field of sports-rural tourism, with great added value,’ he stressed.
In addition, the route has the bonus of passing through 14 villages in the Sierra, where architecture, gastronomy and local culture intersect with the route of the stone paths. The Serra de Tramuntana, declared a cultural landscape in 2011 by Unesco and a protected natural area in 2016, is an ‘incomparable’ setting, said councillor Bestard.
Thus, Mallorca will have a programme that will include a major boost in nature, sports and cultural tourism, to showcase its diversity and tourism possibilities. This is in line with national and international trends, given that an increasing demand for quality tourism is linked to the environment.
