The vice-president of the island’s institution and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, has presented a proposal for a temporary exhibition in 2026, which would coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Museum of Mallorca.

The Consell de Mallorca is requesting, for the second time, that the Bous de Costitx be temporarily exhibited on the island. The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, met this Friday with the director general of Cultural Heritage and Fine Arts of the Spanish government, Ángeles Albert de León, to present, in person, the project to exhibit the Bous de Costitx in the Museu de Mallorca.

The Consell de Mallorca requests, for the second time, to the Spanish Government that the Bous de Costitx be exhibited on the island temporarily

The proposal is entitled ‘The Bous de Costitx return to Mallorca’ and would coincide with the opening of the new archaeology rooms of the Museum of Mallorca, scheduled for 2026. Roca stresses that this is a great opportunity to bring these pieces to the Mallorcan public, to highlight the value of Talayotic culture as a fundamental part of Mallorcan identity and to promote collaboration between cultural institutions.

This is not the first time that the vice-president and councillor has made this request to the Ministry of Culture, the current owner of these emblematic pieces of Mallorcan cultural heritage. In November 2023, Roca met with Ángeles Albert’s predecessor to request a temporary loan of the bous, which form part of the permanent collection of the National Archaeological Museum.

Given that this is a state-owned Asset of Cultural Interest, the Ministry of Culture has been informed that there is no possibility of a permanent return, which is why the Consell de Mallorca has submitted this request for a temporary loan. At the previous meeting, it was explained to the island institution what the protocol for action in these cases is and what steps must be followed.

Thus, following the established protocol, Roca has presented a museum project that, he stresses, ‘represents an opportunity to contextualise the sculptures in their original cultural environment and reinforces the commitment to Mallorca’s historical heritage’. The proposal details the design of the new exhibition rooms of the Museu de Mallorca, the reasons why the Bous de Costitx are requested, guarantee the technical conditions for the conservation of the pieces, and includes a plan for transport, insurance and complementary activities.
