The proposal for the building, owned by the Consell de Mallorca, was presented in September to carry out the restoration project.

The project to restore the emblematic building des Sindicat de Felanitx has been unanimously selected as one of the sites participating in the international architecture competition EUROPAN 18. The Consell de Mallorca, through the Directorate General of Housing and Architecture of the Government of the Balearic Islands, submitted Es Sindicat de Felanitx to the competition, which seeks the exchange of ideas from architects under the age of 40 on those sites that are selected for the previous phases.

With this proposal, made in September, the insular institution was looking for the building it owns to be one of the sites chosen for the recovery project. The registration phase will open at the beginning of March and all architectural proposals may be submitted until the end of June.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the councillor of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, and the mayoress of Felanitx, Catalina Soler, visited Es Sindicat this morning. During the tour of the building, Galmés explained that ‘it is a great thrill and satisfaction that Es Sindicat de Felanitx has been selected for this international competition, as it is a unique opportunity for several European teams to give a new life to the emblematic building’. Galmés stressed that ‘in recent years no progress has been made on the building, and now, this government team in the Consell de Mallorca will give a great boost to the recovery project. The Consell de Mallorca will set up a multidisciplinary technical team, together with the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Felanitx Town Hall, to coordinate the restoration work on Es Sindicat. We want to do it in a consensual way’.

The Felanitx Sindicat, which dates back to 1919, was declared an asset of cultural interest (BIC) with the category of monument in 2001. Subsequently, in 2019, the institution acquired the building, which is included in the list of the hundreds of elements of Spain’s industrial heritage in the framework of the National Plan for Industrial Heritage.

On the other hand, the Consell de Mallorca continues to work to improve security, reinforce the perimeter fence, accesses and interior spaces, and clean and clear the vegetation outside Es Sindicat.
