Citizens and organisations have 10 more days to take part in the prior consultation process opened by the island’s institution

The Consell de Mallorca, through the Serra de Tramuntana Island Council, has begun the procedure for drafting a law to regulate the protection of the Serra de Tramuntana cultural landscape, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2011.

The first step is the opening of a consultation process prior to the drafting of the proposed law, to gather the opinions of the Serra de Tramuntana’s most representative organizations and citizens. The procedure for submitting proposals will remain available at the Consell de Mallorca’s electronic headquarters until February 6th, inclusive.

The Consell de Mallorca is committed to consensus in the new Serra de Tramuntana Law

The Serra de Tramuntana Island Director, Antoni Solivellas, explained that ‘as of today, there are no specific regulations in place to safeguard the exceptional universal value enshrined in the UNESCO declaration; there are only scattered sectoral or generic regulations. For this reason, we believe it is necessary to articulate a legal text’. The island director stressed that ‘it is essential to listen to all the agents involved in order to draw up a law based on consensus and which reflects the real needs of the environment’.

The public consultation focuses on four main issues: the objectives of the regulation and the need and timeliness of adopting it, the problems to be solved with this initiative and possible solutions.
