President Galmés and the mother superior of the congregation have signed the transfer of the administration of the services which, as of tomorrow, 1st February, will be the responsibility of the IMAS.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the mother superior of the germanetes dels pobres, Concepción Dolera, have signed the transfer of the management of the residential services, which the congregation had been providing until now in the emblematic building on carrer del General Riera in Palma, which, by agreement of the Executive Council, will be assigned to the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS). Therefore, from now on, the current places will become part of the public network of care for dependency that IMAS manages on the island.

The Consell de Mallorca formalises the transfer of the management of the Hermanitas de los Pobres (Little Sisters of the Poor)

‘Today is a very important day. We are taking over one hundred per cent of the management of this historic building, so dear to Palma, and of its services to turn it into a leading social and health centre’, said President Galmés. ‘Our priority is the welfare of the citizens of Mallorca, especially the most vulnerable people, and in this way we are once again fulfilling our commitment to create more places, more resources and services. Because we know that many people need them and because we want to contribute to building a town where everyone’s needs are met’, he concluded.

The acquisition of this historic building was formalised on 25 June last, for 11 million euros, and with the commitment of the Consell de Mallorca that it will continue to be used to care for the most vulnerable groups. The IMAS, in addition to taking over the care of the people who now live at the centre, will keep the management team and has subrogated the 50 employees of the current staff, who from this moment onwards will become employees of the island’s institution. In addition, it will progressively incorporate up to 35 new professional profiles, to adjust the staff to the IMAS’s attendance rates.

The complex of les Germanetes dels Pobres is located on a plot of land on Career del General Riera of more than 14,700 square metres. In addition to orchards and large garden areas, it has a built-up area of over 9,700 square metres, comprising a main building and two smaller buildings, each with five floors. The president of IMAS and councillor of Social Welfare of the Consell de Mallorca has highlighted that ‘with the acquisition of this property, we will increase by 50 more public residential places for dependent elderly people, but we will also take advantage of the spaces that are currently in disuse to open a new day centre and create new emergency places for elderly people who need a temporary stay in a residential home’.

‘Ca meva’ is another of the projects that IMAS plans to implement, in the medium term, in one of the building’s modules, which houses 21 apartments independent of the area for the elderly and fully adapted for reduced mobility. It is a housing service for people with disabilities and at risk of social exclusion, based on the Housing methodology that, temporarily, offers its users a personalised home and care, based on their motivations, their freedom of choice and their physical and mental circumstances, to achieve social and labour reintegration.
