Some of the bridge’s pillars are quite damaged and the concrete has fallen. The emergency work may last a month, to guarantee safety over the years; for this reason, users are asked for their understanding, due to the traffic jams it causes.

The emergency repair work on the Jacint Verdaguer bridge, where the ring road passes, has begun these days, with the installation of large scaffolding to carry out the work, which will last a month, fifteen days on each side of the bridge. It is a bridge that was built 50 years ago and, over these five decades, no work has been done on most of the pillars. Other bridges on the ring road were repaired in 2009 and 2010.

These works are very annoying and cause traffic jams, as the repairs are carried out under the bridge where vehicles coming from the airport via the ring road pass through to connect with the Inca motorway. The Consell de Mallorca’s technicians ask users for their understanding, as some parts of the bridge are quite degraded, the concrete has been damaged and emergency action has had to be taken to halt its degradation and guarantee its safety over the years.

According to the technicians, Mallorca’s maritime environment causes the steel slabs to rust much more quickly. This requires a thorough and thorough cleaning of the pillars and the bridge structure. Afterwards, a special coating must be applied to prevent further rusting of the floor slab and the structure must be covered with concrete again.

It takes a fortnight on each side of the bridge to carry out this work, and it cannot be done in the evening, as the cleaning and repair work requires precision. For this reason, one of the lanes leading to the Inca motorway must be cut off so that the urgent repairs can be carried out with maximum safety measures.
