The performances will take place on the 12th, 14th and 16th of February.
Palma’s Teatre Principal premieres ‘Dido and Aeneas’, the second title of the 39th Opera Season, in the Sala Gran of the Teatre Principal. Henry Purcell’s prestigious opera will be performed on the 12th, 14th and 16th of February, the first two performances at 8 pm and the last one at 6 pm.
The Vice-President and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, highlighted the premiere of the Teatre Principal’s first international opera co-production: ‘We are premiering the second title of the 39th Opera Season and we are doing so with one of the great historic names on the Italian and European opera scene, Pier Luigi Pizzi, who at 94 years of age is still at the forefront of stage direction’.
This lyrical production was presented last November in this Italian city, as part of the Ravenna Festival. It is a staging by the prestigious maestro Pier Luigi Pizzi, entitled ‘Didone e Enea nel giorno di Santa Cecilia’, which also includes the piece ‘Ode on St. Cecilia’s Day’ and the opera ‘Dido and Aeneas’, both by Henry Purcell.

The Teatre Principal premieres ‘Dido and Aeneas’, the first international lyrical co-production
In addition to Pier Luigi Pizzi, who is in charge of stage direction and set and costume design, ‘Dido and Aeneas’ has musical direction by Andrés Salado, and a cast of soloists headed by Maite Beaumont, Tome Bibiloni, Irene Mas, Susana Cordón, Begoña Góon Fernández-Rueda, Natalia Salom and Gabriel Alonso. Marco Berriel (stage director of the revival and choreographer), Lorena Marin (costumes), Oscar Frosio (lighting) and Serena Rocco (assistant scenographer) complete the artistic team of this production. The Orquesta Sinfònica de les Illes Balears (Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands) and the Choir of the Teatre Principal de Palma, conducted by Francesc Bonnín, will also perform.
This great opera by Purcell, considered to be one of the primordial works of Baroque music, was created at a date that is not known with certainty, but which in any case is no earlier than 1688, although some authors and musical historians consider a later date.
‘Dido and Aeneas’ tells the love story between the queen of Carthage, Dido, and Aeneas, the hero of Troy. Aeneas will be faced with his destiny and must choose between love for Dido or fulfilling the designs of the gods, founding a new Troy, which will eventually become Rome.
This is the second title of the 39th Opera Season at the Teatre Principal, which began last October with Puccini’s Turandot. The 39th Opera Season will continue with the Easter Concert (12th April) dedicated to Gounod’s Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile, and will close with Donizzetti’s Don Pasquale (18th, 20th and 22nd June).
Antònia Roca pointed out the importance of joining forces with theatres like the one in Ravenna to offer such notable works as ‘Dido and Aeneas’, underlining how proud she is that Palma’s Teatre Principal is forging ties that position it on the international operatic scene.
