Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) celebrates next Sunday 23rd February the opening ceremony of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the first train in Mallorca, on the line between Palma and Inca in 1875. The day will include the institutional commemorative act, the inauguration of an exhibition about the railway on the island, children’s entertainment and several recreational and musical activities throughout the morning and midday at the Intermodal station of Palma and also various activities in Inca.

SFM celebrates next Sunday 23rd in Palma and Inca the opening ceremony of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the train in Mallorca
The celebration will be held simultaneously in Palma and Inca, with the collaboration of the city councils of both municipalities. In Palma, starting at 10:30 a.m., an institutional commemorative ceremony will take place at the entrance to Les Estacions Park from Plaça d’Espanya, in the area of the pergola, where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled and an exhibition on the history of the railway on the island will be inaugurated at the Intermodal station. At the end of the authorities’ visit, SFM will provide a special Palma – Inca – Palma train, and on the way back to the Intermodal station there will be a popular vermutada and musical and humorous performances.

In one of the events planned to celebrate the anniversary, the special Palma – Inca -Palma train that will run next Sunday the 23rd will be christened Mallorca, in memory of the Nasmith Wilson steam locomotive of the Mallorca Railway Company, which made the inaugural train journey between Palma and Inca on the 24th of February 150 years ago.
Intending to recognise the role of the train in society, disseminating its history and promoting the historical railway heritage, the Government of the Balearic Islands and SFM are organising several events throughout the year and have invited the town councils of the municipalities along the corridor to join in the events of the 150th anniversary of the Mallorca train that the railway company is preparing to commemorate the event, which will begin on Sunday 23 February.
