Inca pays tribute to Pablo Ferrer Madariaga with the placing of a Stone of Remembrance

‘Today we are here because the city of Inca wants to recognise Pablo Ferrer Madariaga, as he would have liked, to remember him as he deserves and to embrace his family, who for too many decades have suffered an unjust and cruel oblivion. Because the institutions must ask for forgiveness and remember what should never be repeated, based on recognition, condemnation and historical memory’, stressed the Councillor for Culture and Democratic Memory of Inca City Council, Alice Weber, during her speech.

For his part, the Mayor of Inca, Virgilio Moreno, pointed out that ‘with this act, Inca reaffirms its commitment to historical memory and reparation, remembering those who suffered persecution and injustice, many of whom died defending democracy and their ideals, like Pablo Ferrer’.

Pablo Ferrer Madariaga, son of Pedro Ferrer Alzina – Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry who was also mayor of Inca -, and Severa Madariaga Basterrechea – a deeply liberal woman who was enthusiastic about education for all children, dedicating herself to her profession for 18 years. blo began his military studies as an infantry student at the Academy of Arms in Salamanca.

Pablo Ferrer Madariaga was a victim of repressive violence for his loyalty to democratic legality. He was stationed in Ceuta, where he was Commander of the Ceuta Hunters Battalion, No. 7, in July 1936, and on the 17th and 18th of that month, he refused to support the military rebels against the legitimate government. Arrested and imprisoned, he was subjected to a court martial that condemned him to death in a sentence of 19 November 1936. He was shot, together with Captain Josep Rotger Canals, on 3rd December 1936.

This is the first of the acts that aim to pay homage, reparation and justice to the person of Pablo Ferrer. The City Council of Inca will present, in the next municipal plenary, a proposal to support the request for a declaration of reparation and personal recognition of art. 6 of the Law of Democratic Memory in favour of Mr. Pablo Ferrer Madariaga, which will be presented to Ms. Severa Pons Ferrer, niece of Mr. Ferrer, before the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, as a result of the declaration of illegality and illegitimacy of the court martial that sentenced him to death and the declaration of nullity of the sentence it issued and his conviction, which is contained in the aforementioned regulation, and in view of the right that the declaration also recognises him. The council also plans to dedicate the Memorial of Oblivion in 2026 to him, among other actions.
