Vilafranca has supported the Menorcan firms and met with their managers throughout the morning. ‘The Menorcan footwear industry is a fundamental pillar of the island’s economy and we want to give them all the support we can from the Consell to encourage their national and international expansion. We believe that it is more important than ever to advance in the diversification of our economy while accompanying the sector’s industry on its path towards innovation, preserving the craftsmanship that makes them unique,’ explains the president of the Consell Insular de Menorca.

Currently, the Department of Economy of the Consell Insular has an annual agreement with the Footwear Manufacturers Association by which the Consell allocates 70,000 euros to encourage promotional and advertising activities.

In addition, this Monday the Menorca Tourism Development Foundation is taking part in the inauguration of a tribute to the designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. Specifically, in the first monographic exhibition dedicated to his work in Italy. Organised by the Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries (FICE) and ICEX, the exhibition entitled ‘Balenciaga, Shoes from Spain Tribute’ will bring together 25 exclusive designs by the Basque couturier, on loan from museums and private collections.

The companies Mascaró, Pons Quintana and Ria Menorca have been selected to design and manufacture models that will accompany some of Balenciaga’s iconic pieces, and the Foundation will take advantage of this event to take another step forward in its support for the Menorcan footwear industry. In this way, the Foundation will promote footwear, gastronomy, local produce and Menorca as a destination during the event. For this reason, three Menorcan chefs – Pau Sintes, Albert Marqués and Emilio José San Blas – will be in charge of preparing Menorcan recipes that will be served during the inauguration using local products, and the Menorca brand will be present during the event.

The exhibition, which can be visited from 21 February to 2 March at the Palazzo Morando in Milan.
