Ibiza will celebrate the Day of the Balearic Islands with activities for the whole family at the Sant Rafel Hippodrome

The Councillor of the Presidency, Economic Management and Sports, Salvador Losa, and the Councillor of Culture, Sara Ramón, presented the programme of events promoted by the Island Council of Eivissa, with the collaboration of the Government of the Balearic Islands, to commemorate the Day of the Balearic Islands on the 1st of March.

Councillor Salvador Losa explained that the Day of the Balearic Islands is an opportunity to make ‘our traditions the main protagonists’ for a few days. The main events will be held on 1 March at the San Rafael racecourse, starting at 10.30 a.m., with a dance by the San Carlos de Peralta Alloy and representatives of the Federation of Dance Alloys and Popular Culture of Eivissa; an institutional speech by the president of the Eivissa Council, Vicent Marí; a parade of floats and a tasting of local produce. Afterwards, attendees will be able to enjoy a Menorcan dressage show; an acoustic concert by the group Projecte Mut; and finally a trot trophy.

For her part, as the councillor Sara Ramon explained, ‘we wanted to put together an extensive programme, highlighting the cultural heritage of the island of Ibiza and allowing us to celebrate this festivity with all the groups that represent our island’, which is why the events began on 22 February with the celebration of the fourth edition of the fourth edition of the ‘Muestra de glosadores y cantadores de las Islas Baleares. Muestra de glosadores y cantadores de las Islas Baleares’, in the Cas Serres Auditorium.

This Thursday the 27th of February at 8 pm the 7th Short Film Festival will be held at the Can Jeroni cultural centre in Sant Josep, with the screening of five short films from Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Eivissa, including ‘¿Quién’, a comedy by director Sonia Torres, ‘Arca’, a science fiction short by director Antonia Obrador, and ‘Humormático’, a comedy by director Pau Escribano.

Craft market of the Balearic Islands

The Hippodrome de Sant Rafel will also host the Balearic Islands Craft Market with samples of crafts from all over the islands. This market will feature 8 artisans from Ibiza, as well as 3 craft associations from the island of Ibiza (Herramientas y Trabajos, Sa Bodega and Portmany). Throughout the day, the youngest members of the family will be able to enjoy children’s workshops, traditional games, giant wooden toys and inflatables.

Sports, the main protagonists

The Councillor for Sports, Salvador Losa, explained that the Day of the Balearic Islands is an opportunity to promote some of the sports that are practised on our island. In this spirit, on the 1st of March, there will be a day of basic motorcycling from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm at the Sa Pedrera sports centre in San Antonio de Portmany, and the Islas Baleares Mx Base Motocross in San José de Sa Atalaya, from 10 am to 3 pm. Finally, on the 1st of March at 4 pm, the Can Guerxo Pavilion will host an Intellectual Basketball Open.

Losa has highlighted that the last day will be the 2nd of March with a 3×3 basketball tournament Pistas CEIP Sa Celler at 9:00 am; X Chess Tournament in the Hippodrome of San Rafael at 10.00 am; a motocross Balearic Islands Mx Absolute in San José de Sa Atalaya from 9.00 to 14.00 hours and an Open Basketball Intellectual in the Pavilion of Can Guerxo at 10.00 hours.
