The buildings of the Consell de Mallorca display, from today until the 12th of March, the banner that makes visible International Women’s Day, celebrated on the 8th of March. President Llorenç Galmés, together with the councillor of the Presidency Antoni Fuster, the insular director of Families Ana Ferriol and the director of IbDona Cati Salom, have been in charge of hanging the commemorative banner at the headquarters of the insular institution.

Llorenç Galmés claimed that ‘women must be able to decide freely whatever they want, without barriers or obstacles’ and assured that ‘we will continue to work for equality and in the fight against any kind of violence, defending and protecting the rights of all women, until equality is a reality and not a revivification’.

The Consell de Mallorca appeals to the common commitment to a more egalitarian society this 8th of March

The manifesto, read by the island’s Director of Families, highlights the ‘need to dedicate time and attention to a reality that is still in force and that we are working to achieve full, real and effective equality between women and men’. She also stresses that ‘8M is still necessary today, in 2025, because there are too many existing situations that prevent the free development of women in equality and without discrimination’.

However, she affirms that ‘this 8th March is a new opportunity to demonstrate the citizen and political commitment to equality between men and women, to say loud and clear that the injustice of discrimination has no place in Mallorcan society’.

The Consell’s commitment to equality

The insular institution demonstrates its commitment to equality with an increase in the budget allocated to the Insular Directorate of Families, which grows by 29% compared to 2024. This investment allows for continued progress in improving the island’s services and guaranteeing more efficient care for women who need it. In addition, the president of the Consell has stressed that ‘no item aimed at equality and diversity has suffered cuts, demonstrating with facts its firm commitment to the protection of women’s rights’.

Along the same lines, the Consell has opened the Centre Libertas, a resource that offers comprehensive, free, 24/7 care to victims of sexual violence, providing psychological, social and legal support. Its opening, co-financed with Next Generation EU funds, responds to the need for safe and specialised spaces in Mallorca, facilitating the recovery of affected women.

Main events

To commemorate International Women’s Day, almost a hundred events have been organised in different municipalities of Mallorca. Specifically, the round table ‘Women and the media’ will take place on 5 March from 6.30 pm to 8 pm at CaixaForum. This space will bring together prominent professionals in journalism to debate their experiences in the sector and the different sensibilities that coexist in their work.

Among the speakers will be Ángeles Durán, president of the Association of Journalists of the Balearic Islands; Elka Dimitrova, editor-in-chief of Onda Cero Illes Balears; Nekane Domblás, journalist at Última Hora and associate professor at CESAG-Comillas; Marisa Goñi, director of Diario de Mallorca; Victòria Morell, audiovisual director and scriptwriter; and Maria Antònia Cantallops, head of communications at the ASNIMO Foundation, who will act as moderator.

Also of note is the concert ‘Dones compositores’, by Irene Laguna and Maria Biarge, to be held on 11 March at 6 p.m. in the Misericòrdia Chapel. This cello duet will perform pieces composed exclusively by women, offering a musical experience that highlights the value of female talent.
