The Balearic Islands seek to position themselves as a sustainable tourist destination at the ITB in Berlin
The Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB) has been in charge of coordinating the entire participation in this fair, an event in which the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera will be present in a stand of 700 m², which this year has been increased in size to provide a better service to co-exhibitors, Island Councils and Town Councils, as well as the tourism sector. This space has been financed with funds from the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan-Next Generation.
The stand of the Balearic Islands at ITB is the same one that debuted at the last edition of Fitur but adapted to the space of this other fair. It is a fully accessible stand that invites you to reflect on the use and care of natural resources and is inspired by water and its ecosystems.
With a firm commitment to sustainability, both in its materials and in the entire construction process, the stand also seeks to be a functional and useful space for all the trade fair activity that takes place there.
The Illes Balears stand at ITB will have its own stand with the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, as well as various local councils from the islands and private co-exhibitors such as Melià Hotels International, Blau Hotels, Zafiro Hotels and Mistertransfer.
With the aim of enabling the sector to hold business meetings at the fair in an organised manner, the AETIB has once again set up a table reservation system at the stand, which has been previously communicated to tourism companies so that they can use it to schedule their appointments.
Meetings with tour operators and food and wine space
In terms of trade fair activities, various presentations will be held at the Balearic Islands stand.
On Tuesday 4 March, at 10.30 am, the President of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Jaume Bauzà, will present to the German media the whole process of transformation for sustainability and how a new tourism model is being promoted on the islands. On the same day, there will also be presentations by the Directorate General for Culture and the Directorate General for Sports to position the cultural and sports tourism offer in the German market.
On Wednesday 5 March, the Balearic delegation to Berlin will hold various working meetings with the main tour operators in the German market. They will take place at the stand from 10:00 am and will continue throughout the morning.
These meetings will serve to find out first-hand how the tourist season is shaping up for this market, as well as to provide them with information on the change of model and the transformation process underway on the islands. The meetings will be with tour operators such as Tui, Alltours, Der Touristik and Schauinsland.
In addition, and as was the case at Fitur, the Balearic Islands’ stand at ITB will once again have an enogastronomic space dedicated to promoting local produce as a fundamental element of tourism promotion, under the coordination of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment.
Thus, during the three days of the fair, a total of 12 show cookings will be held by chef Miquel Calent, who will present several dishes prepared with recipes based on local products from the Balearic Islands, such as Mallorcan pork and Menorcan cheese sponge cake or Menorcan veal rice, Mallorcan palo mallorquín and sobrasada de Mallorca. In addition, each of the dishes will be served with two local wines, with a wine pairing led by the renowned German sommelier specialising in Balearic wines, David Schwarzwälder. The sessions will feature wines from the protected geographical indications Eivissa, Formentera, Menorca and Mallorca and the protected designations of origin Binissalem and Pla i Llevant.
By taking part in ITB, the Balearic Islands are reinforcing their image in the German market as a tourist destination that is committed to sustainability, culture and care for its natural environment, highlighting the richness and authenticity of its local produce.
