IBDONA and IEB co-organise the exhibition in Can Balaguer
‘Women and Queens of Mallorca. The Feminine Space in the Middle Ages is a travelling exhibition that aims to support research and raise the profile of women – in this case, the queens of Mallorca (13th and 14th centuries), who were also protagonists of history through the marriage policy of the respective royal houses – and to raise awareness of the relevant features and the evolution of the political role they played in the shadow of power. The exhibition took place for the first time at the Manacor History Museum from September to November 2014.
Eusèbia Rayó Ferrer, writer and author of the volume ‘Queens of Mallorca. A la sombra del poder’ and the researcher Jaume Llabrés Mulet, who promoted the creation of this exhibition in its beginnings, are the curators and those in charge of the coordination and assembly of the current exhibition.
One of the characteristics of this exhibition is its capacity to adapt to the spaces it occupies, and in each one, some variants make it different in each case. In the case of Can Balaguer, part of the exhibition panels will be displayed in the courtyard; there will be a recreation of the dais in the mediaeval hall, forming part of the identifying feature of the space, covered with a carpet where women rested or sat on pillows, and books on women in the Middle Ages and the historical and artistic environment of the Kingdom of Majorca, and other objects, will be placed in one of the rooms adjoining the noble room of the Casal Balaguer dining room.
The exhibition is treated from the perspective of gender and has a deeply informative and didactic character. Therefore, panels with texts and photographs serve to explain in detail the different sections that compose it so that visitors can understand the message contained in the background of the assembly.
A total of 17 activities for 8M
IBDONA has programmed 17 activities throughout the Balearic Islands on 8M. This year, IBDONA wanted to give special visibility to women with disabilities, which is why the slogan for 8M is ‘For an inclusive approach to equality’. Among the activities programmed for 8M, the premiere and screening of the report ‘An Inclusive Look at Equality’ on the four islands, as well as the family show ‘The Rose Bus is for Everyone’, by the Clueless Fairy, also present throughout these weeks on all the islands, stand out this month.
On the 10th of March, the activity ‘En sus tacones’ will take place, which will focus on the role of women in the world of work and business, and on the 12th of March, the annual balance sheet of the 24 Hour Service for victims of gender violence will be made public. The activities will culminate during April, with the organisation of the inter-institutional conference aimed at professionals ‘An inclusive look at equality’, in Eivissa, and the round table discussion ‘Women and Sport’, in Palma.
