The exhibition, which takes place in Madrid, has become the leading international olive oil fair.

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, through the Directorate-General for Agri-food Quality and Local Produce, is attending the World Olive Oil Exhibition for the first time, the most important international fair dedicated to extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), which is taking place today and tomorrow at the IFEMA exhibition centre in Madrid. Specifically, the Government has organised different tastings to showcase various extra virgin olive oils produced in the Balearic Islands.

Joan Llabrés, the Director General for Agri-food Quality and Local Produce, who attended the inauguration and the first oil tasting this morning, said that ‘the presence at the fair of extra virgin olive oil produced in the Balearic Islands will serve to show producers from all over the world the excellent quality of this product’. He added that ‘although in some parts of the Spanish mainland it is not known that olive oil is produced in the Balearic Islands, the olive tree is one of the Mediterranean crops par excellence, and has shaped a landscape that has become one of the most characteristic features of the Tramuntana mountain range’.

During the two days of the fair, there will be two EVOO tastings, led by Lydia E. Larrey, Director of Communication and Promotion of the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin Aceite de Mallorca, the first of which has taken place this morning with products with the PDO Aceite de Mallorca (Aubocassa, Sa Cadernera, Son Catiu, Treurer i Rodamón). The Director General for Agri-food Quality and Local Produce stressed that ‘the olive-growing tradition of the Balearic Islands has evolved towards a commitment to quality in production, which improves the marketing conditions for our oils’.

The second tasting, which will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, will feature oils with the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Aceite de Menorca (Son Felip, Al Parico) and Aceite de Ibiza (Can Rich) and the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Aceite de Mallorca (Can Feliu).
