Health has taken a new step to improve mental health care for the population with the recruitment of five clinical psychologists, who will join the PsicoAP programme. Health incorporates five clinical psychologists to work in health centres

The five clinical psychologists, who have now joined the programme, have the qualification of psychologist specialising in clinical psychology (via PIR) and have currently begun a training rotation in different health centres to later establish themselves in the health sector of their choice. This new incorporation adds five professionals to the four psychologists already working in the PsicoAP programme; thus, there are nine clinical psychologists spread throughout Mallorca.

The clinical psychologists of the PsicoAP programme are distributed by health sectors of the island: three in the Ponent sector, three in the Migjorn sector, two in the Tramuntana sector and one in the Llevant sector.

PsicoAP Programme

The programme aims to improve psychological care adapted to each case to help users overcome their emotional adversities before they become chronic and turn into mental health disorders.

Users access the psychology services after a prior assessment by the referring doctor or nurse, who works together with the centre’s clinical psychologist to determine the best treatment for each case, on an individual basis. This type of action aims to avoid the tendency to over-diagnose and pathologise life situations that involve suffering and contributes to the rational use of the necessary pharmacological or psychotherapeutic prescriptions. The programme also facilitates coordination and communication between health, social and educational resources, and refers patients to more specialised services when necessary.

Clinical psychologists integrated into the primary care team also help to enhance the resources of the team itself, by creating inter-consultation spaces where health professionals (doctors, nurses, etc.) can share cases with psychologists and obtain advice on how to better deal with physical and emotional symptoms. Training sessions are also held to improve their ability to identify and manage patients’ emotional difficulties, as well as to enhance the promotion and prevention of mental health problems.

With this programme, Primary Care in Mallorca reinforces its commitment to offer comprehensive and preventive care aimed at caring for the emotional well-being of the population.
