The marketing of quality wines from the Balearic Islands increased last year by 4% compared to 2023

The Regional Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, stated that ‘in a context of general stagnation of demand in the European wine market, this 4% increase is a very good figure, especially if we take into account that we are growing more than other Spanish DOs such as Rioja, Ribera de Duero or Rueda’.

By type of wine, red wine sales broke the trend of recent years in which sales fell across the board (both in the Balearic Islands, the Spanish mainland and the European Union) and increased by 5.2 per cent last year. Meanwhile, the marketing of white wine continues the upward trend that began a decade ago and increased by 6% compared to 2023.

In the specific case of foreign markets, the largest increase in sales was recorded on the Spanish mainland, where the volume of sales increased by 75%, rising from 3% of total wine sales in 2023 to 5.1% last year.

As for domestic consumption, it remained at 77%. Joan Llabrés, director general of Agri-food Quality and Local Product, explained that ‘one of the tasks of the Regional Ministry, as already set out in the Local Product Promotion Plan, is to increase the marketing of our wines on our islands, and we are already working on stimulating domestic demand, where the targets are individual consumers, but also the visiting population, and the restaurant trade’.

On the other hand, exports from third countries increased by 17.5% between 2023 and 2024. The main export market continues to be Germany, where 63 percent of exports are destined. Switzerland, with 11 percent, and Denmark, with 6 percent, are the next most important markets for Balearic Islands wine. The remaining 18 percent is destined for other countries, with the Scandinavian countries standing out.
