The Orquesta Sinfónica Illes Balears (Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands) will offer the seventh concert of the season on Thursday 20th March 2025 in the Auditorium of Palma. Sara Ferrández will be the viola soloist performing J. Schubert’s Viola Concerto. The programme will be completed with G. Fauré’s Pavane and G. Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 ‘Titan’, conducted by the maestro Pablo Mielgo. This concert will be repeated the following day in the Auditorio de Manacor at 7:30 pm, and tickets can be purchased through the Symphony’s website (www.simfonicadebalears.com).

The concert will begin with an elegant and melancholic work with a slow rhythm that evokes the pavane, an ancient court dance from the 16th century, ‘Pavane, Op. 50’, by the French composer Gabriel Fauré, written in 1887.

The Symphony Orchestra will offer this Thursday the seventh concert of the season with the viola soloist Sara Ferrández

The Viola Concerto in C major is an outstanding work from the viola repertoire of the composer Joseph Schubert (1748-1837). This concerto offers agility and expressiveness on the instrument and stands out for its melodicism and harmonic richness that evoke Mozart.

Sara Ferrández will be the viola soloist performing this work. Critically acclaimed for her warm sound and her naturalness and musicality on stage, Sara Ferrández is one of the most promising violists of her generation. Her innovative vision of music, and her extraordinary way of playing, envelop audiences in a unique atmosphere, even in the largest concert halls. Despite her youth, she has performed in the best international concert halls, such as the Berlin Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and L’Auditori, among many others.

The concert will end with Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1 in D major, composed between 1887 and 1888, with its premiere in 1889 in Budapest. It is one of the most impressive symphonies in the repertoire for its expressive richness and innovative orchestration.

It is important to mention that for this concert, the Symphonic Academy will have a total of 8 students. A project that was born in 2016 with the following objectives: to promote orchestras among young music students in the Balearic Islands; to deepen their musical knowledge from the experience of living in first person what an orchestra is; it is also intended to bring a professional orchestra to young people who are already training in the musical field.
