It is an initiative of the Humanisation Commission to offer friendlier and warmer spaces.

The Mateu Orfila Hospital has renovated two lounges for patients and their companions with the aim of improving their experience during their hospital stay. The initiative arose from the Humanisation Commission of the Menorca Health Area and has been carried out with the support of the Management and funding from the Subdirectorate of Humanisation, User Care and Training of the Balearic Islands Health Service.

The two rooms that have been renovated are in the Surgery and Internal Medicine hospitalisation units. New furniture has been purchased, the walls have been painted in softer colours and floor lights and plants have been installed to create warmer, friendlier and more welcoming spaces for people who have to spend time accompanying a patient in the hospital.

Ana Sanchis, a paediatric nurse and president of the Humanisation Commission, explained that ‘what we want is to avoid the appearance of a medical environment, so that people feel more like they are in a living room at home and that they can have a space where they can have moments of relaxation and a certain amount of privacy, especially in situations.

The new design of the rooms is intended for multi-purpose use so that users can rest, eat or work. In each of the rooms, two seating areas have been created, with a sofa and armchairs – comfortable and at the same time made of materials that make them easy to clean and disinfect – as well as an area with a table and chairs. There is also a shelf with recreational resources for users, such as books and board games, and a charging point for mobile devices.

These rooms are also available to professionals so that they can have a calm and pleasant environment to communicate bad news or share sensitive information with patients or companions, taking into account the emotional needs that are required at this time.

The presentation of the new rooms was attended by the president of the Humanisation Commission, Ana Sanchis, and the head of the User Care Service, Otília Pons. The aim of this action is to improve the experience of the population attended to in the Health Service by means of more humanised care, taking into account all the needs of the people and creating environments that facilitate recovery and emotional well-being.
