President Galmés visited the centre for the promotion of personal autonomy managed by IMAS in Petra, which has been fully operational since the beginning of February.
The main objective of the centres for the promotion of personal autonomy (CPAP) that the Consell de Mallorca manages in different municipalities of the island is to offer services where the elderly can continue to develop their life project, according to their interests, preferences and wishes, while offering them support actions. President Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the councillor for Social Welfare and president of IMAS, Guillermo Sánchez, the mayor of Petra, Salvador Femenias, and the island’s director of Community Care and Promotion of Personal Autonomy, Catalina Maria Mascaró, today visited the Can Real centre in Petra, which has been fully operational since February after a process of refurbishment and modernisation of its facilities.

The Consell reopens Can Real after a process of refurbishment and modernisation of its spaces
‘We are very committed to providing active and healthy ageing for older people all over Mallorca and we are sparing no resources. The improvement of the facilities at Can Real was a necessity. Its users now have a space prepared to offer different services where they can continue working on prevention programmes that, in addition to keeping their physical and cognitive capacities up to date, favour socialisation and guarantee their well-being’, stressed the president of the Consell de Mallorca.
The refurbishment of Can Real has involved improvements to the structure, technical conditioning and air conditioning of the common areas, as well as the adaptation of the part used for offices, with the conversion of one of the rooms that were used for different administrative purposes into three independent rooms. It also has three multi-purpose rooms where workshops, courses and other activities promoted by the centre are held.
‘From this centre and the other CPAPs we manage throughout the island, we work to prevent the consequences of the ageing process in all areas, such as physical, mobility, cognitive and/or social. They are centres aimed at promoting and organising activities that encourage healthy habits, coexistence and mutual help, to achieve maximum quality of life,’ said the IMAS president.
Can Real currently has 146 active people enrolled in some of the courses, workshops or activities organised. ‘At the moment the centre is quite active, the workshops are being very well received and this year there have been more registrations than in previous years,’ said Catalina Maria Mascaró, the island’s director of Community Care and Promotion of Autonomy.
Specifically, the centre offers daily workshops on handicrafts, physical maintenance (yoga, pilates or gentle gymnastics) adapted to the capacity and autonomy of the users, cognitive skills taught by professionals from the Section for the Promotion of Autonomy of the Elderly of the IMAS and health and wellbeing and IT from the Fundación la Caixa.
In addition, the centre also organises other specific monographic activities such as a gastronomy workshop which has been held in the centre’s recently renovated kitchen, and throughout the year there are different intergenerational activities scheduled with pupils from the Sans Vicenç de Paül school in Son Serra – La Vileta.
Also once a month, with the collaboration of Apropa Cultura, excursions or outings to theatres, festivals or museums are organised, according to the demand of the users.

Can Real is open from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 14:30 and work is underway to introduce other activities in the afternoon. ‘At the moment, these activities are carried out on a very ad hoc basis and the intention is to expand the range of activities with new ones. Being able to have this space is a privilege and we want to take advantage of the good response that users are having to all the initiatives proposed by the centre,’ Mascaró said.
