The Director General of Mobility presents the increase in frequency and fleet of TIB buses and calls for better state funding for public transport on the Islands.

The Director General of Mobility of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Lorena del Valle, presented in Seville the measures adopted to improve public transport this term of office and in particular the concessions of the TIB intercity bus service in Mallorca, one of the points discussed at the annual meeting of the Spanish Confederation of Bus Transport (Confebus), with the participation of central and regional governments and agents from the sector.

In a round table discussion at the Confebus Summit 2025, focused on The challenges facing administrations in the public procurement of bus services, the recent modification of bus concessions in the TIB network was one of the issues analysed and the Director General of Mobility of the Balearic Islands highlighted the need to introduce these improvements to adapt the bus service to the increase in demand, given that the concessions in force since 2021 had become outdated in just two years.

Mobility presents improvements to the TIB network

By modifying the three TIB bus concessions in Mallorca, explained Del Valle, the Government has achieved ‘an increase of approximately 50% of the service initially planned, with better frequencies, more timetables, more routes and more buses’, an expansion of the fleet that will mean 27 more buses, as well as the implementation of all Aerotib lines from various municipalities to the airport throughout the year, including the low season.

The Director of Mobility recalled that a few months into the term of office, ‘it became clear in November 2023 that it was not possible to continue with the current contracts at that time’. During the year 2024, this process of negotiating modifications to the bus concession contracts has been promoted and developed, which has already resulted in effective improvements to various regular lines and the launch of Aerotib lines in the low season.

During the Confebus meeting with the heads of mobility from different autonomous communities and the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the issue of public transport funding was also discussed. In this regard, Lorena del Valle reiterated the Government’s claim to the Spanish Government to receive ‘better, stable, known and adequate state funding’ for public transport.
