The implementation of sensors and smart meters will improve the management of water resources.

The initiative is part of the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The Consell de Govern has authorised the processing of the contract for the supply and installation of instruments for measuring and controlling water points in order to automate the control network of the public water domain of the Balearic Islands.

This initiative declared to be of strategic interest within the Autonomous Community Strategic Plan – Illes Balears 2030 Investment Strategy, is part of the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and has a budget of 2,700,168.99 euros and a completion period of nine months.

The Government promotes the digitisation of water control with an investment of 2.7 million euros

The project aims to modernise and optimise the management of water resources, reinforcing the monitoring and control of groundwater bodies. To this end, measurement probes and meters with radio data transmission technology (LoRaWAN protocol) will be installed, which will improve supervision and efficiency in water use.

The contract is divided into two lots:

Lot 1: Probes for monitoring piezometric depths and groundwater quality.

Lot 2: Meters to measure the volumes extracted by large consumers and natural sources.
These actions respond to the objectives of the PERTE for the digitalisation of the water cycle, approved by the Council of Ministers in 2022, which promotes technological transformation in the management of water resources throughout Spain. They are also in line with the Balearic Islands Investment Strategy 2030, which is committed to innovation and sustainability in key infrastructures for the territory.

The contract will be financed from the 2025 and 2026 budgets, with the following distribution:

Lot 1: 1,561,660.04 euros (867,588.91 euros in 2025 and 694,071.13 euros in 2026).
Lot 2: 1,138,508.95 euros (632,504.97 euros in 2025 and 506,003.98 euros in 2026).

This investment is part of the Government’s commitment to digitalisation and efficiency in water management, an essential resource for the environment and the economy of the Balearic Islands.
