The government organises the fourth edition of Forestry Day to raise awareness among young people of the importance of conserving and protecting forests.

The councillor Joan Simonet, who stressed the importance of these initiatives, emphasised that ‘forests are an essential heritage for our territory. Their protection depends on the knowledge and involvement of the new generations. That is why, with these conferences, young people not only learn about the importance of the natural environment but also develop an emotional bond with it, which is fundamental to guarantee its conservation in the future. In this sense, the Regional Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment stated that knowledge and awareness are key to preserving the natural heritage: ‘Conferences like this help to instil in young people a forestry culture that guarantees the conservation and recovery of island forests, in the face of the threat of the consequences of climate change that degrade forest areas, such as fires, pests and diseases’.

In this way, the students have learned about the importance of forest conservation, fire prevention, the use of forest resources and the future of these important areas for society. They were able to participate in four thematic areas dedicated to different aspects of the forest: How do we defend forests from forest fires? How do we work for the future of forests? What do forests produce? What are the living beings that live in forests and how are they linked?

Municipal environmental technicians, the Agricultural Cooperative, the Artà Police and Civil Protection also collaborated in the event. In addition, the Regional Ministry wished to acknowledge the collaboration of Red Eléctrica, which has financed the transport of students to the Sa Duaia public estate, thus enabling the participation of schools in this educational and environmental initiative, within the framework of the recently renewed Agreement between the two institutions. Red Eléctrica collaborated in the reforestation of this natural area after the 2013 fire.
