Last year each citizen deposited in the green containers about 113 containers per person to reach more than 491,000 in the day and exceed 651 per minute
Formentera is the island that leads the contribution in the selective collection of glass, followed by Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca.
Spain remains above the targets required by the European Union for the glass fraction for the year 2025 with an estimated recycling rate of glass containers for 2024 of 71.1%.
The citizens of the Balearic Islands deposited 491,000 containers in green containers per day and more than 351 containers per minute. Specifically, during the year 2024, each person living on the islands deposited 33.1 kg/IPH glass containers, the equivalent of 113 containers per person, in the 5,196 green containers installed in the region. These results place the region above the national average (19.1 kg/inhabitant or 65 containers per person). These data are provided by Ecovidrio, the only specialised SCRAP that manages the selective collection on the ground and responds to the sustainability of all glass containers from the source.

The Balearic Islands is well above the national average in a separate collection of glass containers with 52,400 tonnes in 2024
By islands, Formentera led the citizen contribution to the selective collection of glass with 52.97 kg/IPH, followed by Ibiza (47.4 kg/IPH), Menorca (27.3 kg/IPH) and Mallorca (26.3 kg/IPH).
According to the Councillor for Enterprise, Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, ‘these figures are very positive for the islands because they highlight the public’s awareness of recycling and care for the environment and because they show that we are doing a good job and that we are on the right track’.
For his part, Roberto Fuentes, Ecovidrio’s area manager: ‘These results show that Ecovidrio’s close relationship with the public administration allows us to continue improving our results year after year. Even so, if we want to put the Balearic Islands in the place it deserve in terms of circularity, local councils must implement municipal ordinances that establish the obligation to recycle and separate at source, as established by law. This is the only way to achieve the objectives that lie ahead of us’.
For yet another year, the Balearic hotel and catering industry has continued to be a strategic pillar of action for Ecovidrio. Last year, the EcoVares plan also had an impact on 3,300 establishments and launched 25 campaigns, in close collaboration with the local councils, to ensure excellent compliance with the municipal ordinances that establish the obligation for large generators to separate waste at source.
In addition to all the glass deposited in the green containers, a further 68,234 tonnes of glass packaging waste that was not correctly separated at source was recovered in the 26 urban waste treatment plants throughout the country.
