The Balearic Islands are proving that they are capable of increasing enrolment month by month during the winter
Unemployment is down 2.7% compared to a year ago and 1.9% month-on-month, while the administrative unemployment rate in March was 5.2%, close to full employment.
The Balearic Islands lead the ranking of communities with the highest number of permanent contracts: 70.8% of the total compared to the national average of 43.8%.
The self-employed regime in the Balearic Islands totalled 100,853 people in March, making the Balearic Islands the autonomous community with the largest number of self-employed workers.

The Balearic Islands reached 524,469 new registrations in March and is the region with the highest month-on-month increase in employment: 5.8%
In March, the Balearic Islands continued to lead the ranking of autonomous communities with the highest number of Social Security registrations. The number of people registered last month was 524,469, which implies an increase of 10,298 people concerning March 2024 (+2%). In Spain as a whole, there was an increase in employment of 2.2%.
In month-on-month terms, the Balearic Islands is the territory with the sharpest increase in employment. Thus, from February to March, enrolment increased by 28,931 persons, an increase of 5.84%. Behind the Balearic Islands is Cantabria, with an increase in employment of 1.1%.
Regarding these figures, the regional secretary for Labour, Employment and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, stressed that ‘the Balearic Islands have been able to systematically create jobs every month of the year and, specifically, during the winter months, which brings us to historic figures that we are consolidating month by month’, unlike other communities that have begun to create jobs with the start of the tourist season.
She added that ‘all the factors indicate that in terms of employment, we will also consolidate satisfactory data this season’.
During her appearance, the regional secretary highlighted the number of self-employed workers in the Balearic Islands, which has registered figures ‘well above those of the rest of Spain. This government is committed to this group and we are satisfied with the response of our public policies to help this sector.
He also highlighted the work done to achieve a higher quality of employment: ‘more than 70% of contracts in the Autonomous Community are permanent and part-time contracts are 15.7% compared to 20.06% in Spain as a whole’.
Self-employed
Specifically, the self-employed regime in the Balearic Islands accounted for 100,853 people in March, a figure that represents 19.2% of total registered employment. The number of people who have chosen this type of affiliation increased by 2,232 compared to a year ago (+2.3%) and by 1,457 (+1.5%) compared to the previous month.
According to the 2024 data, one in five people are self-employed in the Balearic Islands, making it the region with the highest number of self-employed workers.
Unemployment
In March, the Balearic Islands registered 28,856 unemployed people, which implies a decrease of 806 people (-2.7%) compared to a year ago. Unemployment fell in Mallorca (-3.2 %) and Eivissa (-0.7 %), but rose in Formentera (+9.2 %) and Menorca (+0.3 %). In Spain as a whole, unemployment fell by 146,865 persons (-5.4 %).
From a month-on-month perspective, unemployment in the Balearic Islands fell by 551 persons (-1.9 %) compared with February. This decrease is found on all the islands, especially in Eivissa (-3.7%), followed by Formentera (-2.7%), Mallorca (-1.7%) and Menorca (-1.0%). In this section, unemployment in the State recorded a decrease of 0.5 %.
The administrative unemployment rate for March was 5.2%, 0.3 points below the figures recorded a year earlier.
By group, unemployment was mostly lower among women (-4.3 %), the over-25s (-5.1 %) and Spaniards (-4.6 %) than a year ago. On the other hand, unemployment rose among the under-25s (+17.5 %), EU foreigners (+0.5 %) and non-EU nationals (+7.5 %). Year-on-year unemployment fell in all sectors except hotels and catering, where it rose by 3.4 %, and among those without previous employment (+1.2 %), while it fell in the rest of services (-5.7 %) and in industry (-5.1 %).
Month-on-month, unemployment in March fell by 551 persons (-1.9 %). This decrease is found on all the islands: -3.7 % in Eivissa, -2.7 % in Formentera, -1.7 % in Mallorca and -1.7 % in Menorca.
Compared with February, unemployment fell mainly among men (-2.1 %), the over-25s (-2.0 %) and EU foreigners (-5.1 %). By sector, in this category, unemployment fell in hotels and catering (-6.0 %), and in other services other than hotels and catering and trade (-2.0 %), but rose among the previously unemployed (+4.6 %).
Hiring
In the month of March, 29,245 new contracts were registered in the Balearic Islands, 379 fewer than in the same month a year ago (-1.3 %). From this perspective, hiring fell on all the islands, except in Mallorca, where it rose by 0.5%. Thus, in Eivissa hiring fell by 10.8 %, in Menorca by 1 % and in Formentera by 11.5 %.
Hiring fell most among women (-2.4 %), those over 25 years of age (-2.4 %) and EU foreigners (-11 %). On the other hand, it rises among those under 25 (+3.46 %) and Spaniards (+0.1 %).
By sector, if we compare year-on-year, recruitment falls in agriculture (-21.5 %) and in hotels and restaurants (-13.4 %), while it rises in industry (+11.0 %) and in other services other than commerce and hotels and restaurants (+6.9 %), as well as in construction.
If we compare the hiring data with the previous month, February, we observe an increase of 5,391 hirings, +22.6 %. This increase in hiring is particularly noticeable in Mallorca (+23.4 %), followed by Menorca (+22.6 %), Eivissa (+18.1 %) and Formentera (+13.0 %).
By groups, month-on-month hiring grew more among women (+31.1 %), those over 25 years of age (+23.4 %) and among EU foreigners (+45.7 %). By sector, hiring in this category increased in hotels and catering (+70.2 %) and commerce (+31.4 %), but fell in construction (-16.3 %).
In terms of the percentage of permanent contracts, the Balearic Islands reached 70.8 % of the total, and continued to lead the ranking by autonomous communities in March, compared with the national average of 43.8 %. The rate of partial contracts was 15.7%, compared with the national average of 20.6%.
Job seekers
The number of job seekers in March stood at 100,459 persons, which represents an increase of 10,381 job seekers (+11.5 %) compared to March 2024. This trend is observed on all the islands, especially in Eivissa (+12.8 %), followed by Mallorca (+11.7 %), Formentera (+11.4 %) and Menorca (+8.2 %).
With respect to February, the number of job seekers on the islands fell by 22,516 people (-18.3 %). By islands, these users fell most in Mallorca (-19.3 %), followed by Eivissa (-16.7 %), Menorca (-14.0 %) and finally Formentera (-9.7 %).
With regard to the unemployment benefit protection rate, in March this indicator stood at 39.9 %, which is 10 points lower than the protection rate of a year ago (49.9 %).
