The president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, inaugurates the complete refurbishment of Avinguda de Costa i Llobera in Artà, an essential road for traffic in the Llevant region

In 2020, the pine trees on the avenue were cut down in an emergency action, because these trees were a danger to road safety. Just over a year ago, President Galmés presented the reform project in Artà, and today the works are already a reality and the road has been opened to traffic. The car park near the ses Païsses roundabout and the avenue’s side boulevards are to be handed over to the Town Hall.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca unveiled a plaque commemorating the inauguration, accompanied by the mayor of Artà, Manolo Galán; the councillor for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructures, Fernando Rubio, and the island’s director of Infrastructures, Rafel Gelabert. The inauguration of the refurbishment of Avinguda de Costa i Llobera,’ said Llorenç Galmés, ’is a clear sign that we are keeping our word. Since 2020, when the pine trees had to be cut down because of the damage they were causing and endangering drivers, the work had been pending. Just a year ago we presented the project and today we can inaugurate a very important improvement for all Artanencs and residents of Capdepera and Cala Rajada’.

Galmés also spoke of the Artà bypass, a 7-million-dollar project that is currently in the public exhibition phase and which will take traffic away from the centre of the town towards the Betlem hermitage and the Llevant Natural Park. The president has indicated that ‘the works could begin in the first quarter of 2026, as changes have been made to the initial project, following requests from the Town Council and, once agreed, it has had to go through the relevant public exhibition again’.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REFORM OF COSTA Y LLOBERA

Pavement reinforcement: the asphalt pavement of the avenue was in a very deteriorated state and in several stretches there were defects such as loss of thickness and various pathologies such as crocodile skin. The road surface renovation work was carried out both on the main road and in side areas of boulevards and in the car park next to the ses Païsses roundabout.
Removal of trunks: the remains of the pine trees felled in November 2020 on Avinguda de Costa i Llobera have been removed for safety reasons. As a consequence of the removal of these specimens, the work has also involved a densification of trees in order to maintain a green environment and the adaptation of the pavements. Specifically, more than 80 holm oaks, clams and love trees have been planted, as well as more than 600 shrubs such as chickpeas, aladern, arbocera, mastic and rosemary.
Drainage improvement actions: in the roundabout in front of the Guardia Civil barracks, a drainage channel was installed to improve rainwater collection. In addition, an area of water accumulation was detected at the pedestrian crossing at kilometre point 68.2, which was eliminated by means of a network of scuppers and collectors. Some of the existing gratings at pedestrian crossings have also been renewed.
Specific repairs to pavements: more than 1,400 metres of pavements have been renovated.

Other actions: installation of a new irrigation system, renovation of vertical signage, horizontal signage and signposting in the area.
