Under the theme ‘From the fields of Raixa to home’, more activities on other crops such as olive and almond trees will be held throughout the year.

The Consell de Mallorca’s Department of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports has organised a series of themed workshops on citrus trees at the Raixa public estate on the occasion of the European Day of Historic Gardens promoted by the network of cities with this type of heritage monuments.

In this way, Raixa joins this celebration with a programme of three free workshops for those over 18 years of age, lasting two hours, with the aim of showing the educational value of these natural and cultural spaces.

The second vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, stressed the importance of the Raixa gardens being part of the European Cultural Itinerary of Historic Gardens, a network that brings together historic gardens and landscapes in Europe, which highlights ‘our heritage and contributes to its knowledge and protection’.

This cycle of activities, Bestard added, ‘are a unique opportunity to enjoy nature, learn about the cultivation of oranges and lemons and discover new ways of using these typical fruits of the area’ and ‘serve to raise awareness in society of the need to conserve and protect these gardens, which are not only an artistic asset, but also an important component of biodiversity and European history’.

Cycle of workshops on citrus fruits

On 3 May there will be a workshop on making orange marmalade. This activity will allow participants to enjoy a guided tour of the estate’s orange groves, where they can learn about the history and varieties of this fruit. Afterwards, there will be a practical workshop to learn how to make homemade orange marmalade. Attendees will be able to discover the techniques for preparing this natural sweet and will be able to take home a sample.

On 10 May there will be a workshop on how to make lemon liqueur. The activity will begin with a guided tour of the countryside, where participants will learn about the cultivation and characteristics of this fruit. This will be followed by a workshop to make lemon liqueur, a traditional drink that combines the essence of the fruit with different natural ingredients. Attendees will learn all about the preparation process and will be able to take home their creations.

Finally, on 17 May there will be a workshop entitled Citrus fruits today; practical applications, which will include a guided tour of the countryside where the benefits and uses of oranges and lemons will be explained. Afterwards, a workshop will be held to make different products to make the most of oranges and lemons: fabric softener, vinegar for cleaning, vinegar for consumption and salt flavoured with lemon or orange.

This initiative is part of a programme of activities to promote knowledge of the garden organised by the Department of the Environment, which this year is being carried out under the slogan ‘From the fields of Raixa to home’ and which will include two more cycles of themed workshops on traditional crops on the estate, such as olive and almond trees.

Raixa, in the network of Historic Gardens since 2021

The Raixa Gardens have been certified as a European Cultural Itinerary of Historic Gardens since October 2021 for their high historical, artistic and social value. The European Day of Historic Gardens, which is celebrated every year on 26 April, aims to promote the conservation and knowledge of historic gardens as part of Europe’s cultural heritage. The day was established to highlight the importance of gardens as living testimonies to the history, art and landscaping of different periods and cultures.

Through this network, the European Historic Gardens Day promotes special activities, such as guided tours, events, exhibitions and educational activities, enabling citizens and tourists to discover the diversity and richness of historic gardens in Europe.
