The infrastructure, with an investment of 21 million euros, will bring quality water from Petra in an estimated period of two years
The Directorate General of Water Resources of the Government of the Balearic Islands maintains its technical and strategic position regarding the drinking water supply solution in Manacor, based on the connection to the high-level network.
This action is backed by an investment of 21 million euros, already approved by the Consell de Govern, to bring water from Petra to Manacor. The project is about to be put out to tender and is expected to provide the municipality with quality water within two years.

The Directorate General of Water Resources confirms its commitment to the high-level connection as a supply solution for Manacor
Under the Hydrological Plan of the Balearic Islands, the treatment of water from the aquifer using reverse osmosis has been ruled out and a solution that guarantees a stable and sustainable supply through the high water system has been chosen.
This infrastructure will also allow part of Manacor’s underground resources to be mixed with better-quality water so that the supply complies with all the sanitary parameters.
Water Resources defends a supply model that prioritises the protection of the aquifer over its overexploitation. In this sense, it is considered that the installation of a drinking water treatment plant would mean an increase in water abstractions.
Water Resources defends a supply model that prioritises the protection of the aquifer over its overexploitation. In this sense, it is considered that the installation of a drinking water treatment plant would mean an increase in underground extractions, while the connection to the upstream network would reduce them, guaranteeing a sustainable supply in the medium and long term.
The project includes the construction of a pipeline that will connect Petra with Manacor, giving continuity to the network that already links Maria de la Salut and Petra, and the construction of a regulating tank that will make it possible to manage the supply of drinking water more efficiently.
This infrastructure, which forms part of the planning included in the Hydrological Plan of the Hydrographic Demarcation of the Balearic Islands, has as its main objective to guarantee the supply of drinking water in quantity and quality to the city of Manacor, thus correcting a historical problem of the capital of the Llevant region due to the scarcity of resources and the nitrate contamination of the body of water that supplies it.
This work represents a major extension of the Govern’s upstream network that will reduce the pressure on the aquifers in the Llevant area, favouring their recovery, and will allow, in a future extension, to reach the coastal towns of the Llevant of Mallorca to reinforce their supply and reduce groundwater extraction, avoiding saline intrusion due to overexploitation.
The project is part of a global strategy for the improvement of water infrastructures in Mallorca, aimed at consolidating a sustainable and resilient supply system in the face of the challenges of climate change and the growth in demand.
