The Spine Unit of the Traumatology Service has already performed seven successful interventions

The Traumatology Service of the Hospital Comarcal de Inca has carried out its first endoscopic single-port lumbar spine surgeries. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, using a single incision of less than one centimetre. It is a technique very similar to knee, shoulder or wrist arthroscopy.

Monoportal endoscopic surgery has several advantages over conventional surgery: it reduces soft tissue manipulation, which reduces postoperative pain; it allows work in restricted areas without increasing the size of the incision; and it allows a faster and safer recovery. The patient usually goes home the day after the operation.

The most common conditions treated by this technique are lumbar disc herniations, canal and lateral recess stenosis and lumbar disc disease. The introduction of this type of surgery at the Hospital Comarcal de Inca has made it possible for obese patients or those with serious illnesses to have their lumbar injuries operated on, as the technique reduces the risk of bleeding and is less invasive than conventional surgery.
