The Government of the Balearic Islands has declared three days of official mourning in the autonomous community for the death of Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88. Using a decree signed by the president of the Government, Margalida Prohens, the mourning period will run from 15:00 on Monday, 21 April until 15:00 on Thursday, 24 April. These days, the flags of all public administration buildings in the Balearic Islands will fly at half-mast as a sign of respect and condolence.

This declaration will become official once it has been published in an extraordinary bulletin in the BOIB (Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands). In addition, on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., a minute’s silence will be observed at the Consolat de Mar.

The Consell de Mallorca has also joined the three days of official mourning and has ordered the flags of the Palau del Consell and the Teatre Principal to fly at half-mast during this period.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires in 1936, was the first Latin American pontiff and the first Jesuit in history to accede to the papacy. Throughout his pontificate, he has been recognised for his humility, his commitment to a close church, and for a message focused on social justice and the defence of the most vulnerable, leaving a deep mark around the world.
