The OSIB will feature violin soloist Alexandra Conunova performing Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Sascha Goetzel conducting
Tragic Overture by J. Brahms; the Violin Concerto by E. Korngold and the Symphony No. 3 ‘Heroic’ by L. v. Beethoven will be the programme to be performed by the OSIB. Brahms; the Violin Concerto by E. Korngold and the Symphony No. 3 ‘Heroic’ by L. v. Beethoven will be the programme performed by the Orquesta Sinfónica de les Illes Balears on the 25th of April 2025, at 8 pm, in the Teatro Principal de Palma. Alexandra Conunova will be the solo violinist performing the concerto by the Austrian composer, and Sascha Goetzel will be the guest conductor for the evening. Tickets are already on sale and can be purchased at the box office of the Teatro Principal de Palma or on the Symphony Orchestra’s website (www.simfonicadebalears.com).
The concert will begin with a powerful start, with dry, energetic chords that mark J. Brahms’ Tragic Overture. Composed in 1880, this is an emotional, powerful and dramatic piece in which we can appreciate a more classical Brahms, both structurally and romantically.
The OSIB will feature violinist Alexandra Conunova to perform E. Korngold’s Violin Concerto, one of the jewels of the repertoire. This work was composed in 1945, after the Second World War, when the Austrian composer (a pioneer in film music) decided to leave Hollywood. An influence that can be seen in the violin concerto as the melodies come from his film scores.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Heroic’ in the OSIB concert at Palma’s Teatre Principal on 25 April
Alexandra Conunova has received the First Prize at the International Violin Competition ‘Joseph Joachim’ in Hannover in 2012, and has been awarded at the XV International Competition ‘Tchaikovsky’ in Moscow and at the International Violin Competition in Singapore. Praised for her virtuosity, warm tone, impressive colour range and impeccable technique, in 2016 she was also awarded the prestigious Borletti-Buittoni Trust Scholarship in London.
The concert will conclude with one of the most revolutionary and important works in the history of music, L. v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Heroic’. The work was composed between 1803 and 1804, a time when the composer was going through a difficult inner conflict due to his deafness but, at the same time, at a time when he was redefining his style, moving away from classicism towards a more personal tone.
Sascha Goetzel will conduct the concert. A dynamic and charismatic musical presence, he has emerged as a multi-faceted conductor: a noted orchestra builder, creative programmer, entrepreneur, educator, and advocate for musicians and artists. At the end of 2021, he was appointed music director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, a position he assumed for an initial four-year term beginning in September 2022. In addition, he has been appointed music director of NYO-CAN, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada since summer 2022.
