The Government of the Balearic Islands has formally requested that the central government adopt urgent measures to ensure health and safety at work on the construction sites at Palma de Mallorca Airport, operated by AENA.

The regional Minister of Business, Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, sent a letter to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, expressing serious concern over the lack of coordination and planning, as well as a rise in workplace incidents.

Urgent Measures to Ensure Workplace Safety at Palma Airport Construction Site

“We are dedicating time and resources to protect the health and safety of our workers, but we are seeing that it is not enough. Unions such as CCOO and USO continue to report a lack of coordination, and above all, a lack of information and planning on the construction sites, which is creating unease and concern,” Sáenz de San Pedro stated in the letter.

The Balearic Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (IBASSAL) has conducted 10 inspections in 2024, with three additional visits so far in 2025. These inspections revealed persistent irregularities, particularly in task coordination and information dissemination, which are causing concern among workers and labour authorities alike.

Despite repeated inspections, the problems remain. IBASSAL has also highlighted an increase in workplace accidents: five incidents were recorded in 2024, and two more have occurred in the first few months of 2025.

The regional government stresses that responsibility for workplace safety at these sites lies with the State, through AENA, and is calling on the relevant national authorities to take immediate action to protect workers.
