Menorca Island Council Grants €10,000 to Amics de la Mar del Port de Maó for Traditional Boat Conservation
The Amics de la Mar association, a non-profit organisation, is dedicated to preserving Menorca’s traditional maritime heritage. Within the quarry, the group maintains and restores over 90 traditional boats, many of them historic, representing various types of regional seafaring craftsmanship.
In addition to conservation efforts, the association hosts free guided tours every Saturday at the quarry and takes part in public events and nautical gatherings, promoting lateen sailing aboard historic vessels from its fleet.
Through this grant, the Department of Culture, Education, Youth and Sports of the Island Council reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding Menorca’s ethnological maritime heritage, encouraging classic boat gatherings and raising public awareness of the need to protect this cultural legacy.
