The Consell Insular d’Eivissa will eliminate the 9,000 hotel beds currently available in the island’s tourism bed pool. This is the request made today by the Hotel Federation to the president of the Consell, Vicent Marí, during a meeting between the federation and the institution, also attended by the Minister of Tourism Planning, Mariano Juan.

The aim of this measure, as explained by the president of the Consell, is to ensure that these beds are no longer available for use by new tourism establishments after the approval of the Tourism Areas Intervention Plan (PIAT), which is currently being drafted and will set a ceiling on the number of tourist beds on the island.

This proposal ensures that the beds released from closed establishments in recent years will not be reused for new ones.

The president expressed his appreciation for the tourism accommodation sector’s decision to forego potential tourism growth, stating that it “helps pave the way for the containment and sustainability path we have set for Ibiza.” The Consell will now include this request in the current PIAT drafting phase, effectively reducing the number of available beds to zero. “These are 9,000 tourist beds that will disappear from the future market in Ibiza, which marks a significant step in the island’s containment policy and demonstrates that we are all aligned.”

Marí described the announcement as “great news” and emphasised that it reflects the “responsible policies being pursued jointly by public administrations and the private sector on the island. This is the future we must embrace — a sustainable island that can be enjoyed by both residents and tourists, where we seek a balance that benefits everyone.” The removal of these beds will be officially certified in the PIAT.

The meeting also addressed the need to define redevelopment areas across the island. A working group will be formed with the municipalities to designate these areas and facilitate both public and private investment to improve them.

Maria Costa, president of the Hotel Federation, explained that the federation made this decision “as a gesture of responsibility, in the context of sustainability, containment, and maintaining the balance we all want for Ibiza.” Costa expressed hope that this action will serve as a precedent and example for other federations, “to achieve the long-desired balance between residents and tourists.”

President Vicent Marí concluded by highlighting that this decision is further proof of the commitment being forged on the island, thanks to the dialogue promoted by the Consell between administrations, platforms, and the tourism sector. He emphasised that these containment and limitation measures are “the guarantee of maintaining a high-quality offering on the island, while balancing the needs of residents and visitors.”
