This is a visual guide to promoting responsible consumption and raising awareness of Mallorca’s traditional fishing methods among schoolchildren and the general public.

The Consell de Mallorca presented at Palma’s Mercat de l’Olivar the new awareness campaign “Peixos i marisc de la mar balear” (“Fish and Seafood from the Balearic Sea”), an initiative designed to bring the island’s fishing traditions and maritime culture closer to schools and the wider public.

The Vice President of the Consell and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, emphasised that “this project offers a visual and detailed guide on the optimal fishing seasons for species in our sea. Moreover, it highlights traditional fishing techniques, reinforcing the link between our cultural heritage and the need to conserve the marine environment.”

Roca also pointed out that “the sea is an essential part of Mallorca’s identity. The island has built its history around fishing and marine biodiversity. With this campaign, we aim to ensure that future generations are aware of this legacy while promoting sustainable fishing that respects seasonality and helps preserve biodiversity.”

Albert Forés, Director of the Museu Marítim de Mallorca, emphasised the collaboration between institutions and experts that made this campaign possible: “We have received support from the Sant Pere Fishermen’s Guild of Palma, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, the CSIC, and the Planet Tuna project. The scientific accuracy of the content and the campaign’s educational purpose are key to bringing maritime culture to schoolchildren and the public,” he explained.

The campaign includes graphic materials such as posters and brochures, with illustrations by Flavia Gargiulo Rosa and texts by María López. These materials clearly and visually explain the main species of the Balearic Sea, their seasonality, and traditional fishing techniques—from potera and palangre to llampuguera and jonquillera net fishing.

The materials will be distributed to schools participating in activities at the Museu Marítim de Mallorca, at the fishing port of Palma, and in local fish markets and shops. They will also be featured at the Sardine Fair (Fira de la Sardina), which will take place in Palma from May 15 to 18, aiming to raise public awareness about the importance of maritime heritage and responsible fishing.
